Background
Energising Development (EnDev) is a global multi - donor partnership implemented by Deutsche Geseilschaft fur lnternatlonale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) that facilitates access to modern energy services in 24 countries worldwide. in Uganda, EnDev, under the Promotion of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme (PREEEP) cooperates closely with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD).

EnDev Uganda facilitates access to modern energy services through market development with the private sector for improved cook stoves (iCS) and solar PV products. in its ICS programme component EnDev Uganda supports Ugandan ICS companies to increase their production capacity, improve their product and service quality as well as competitiveness and marketability.

To foster rural ICS access EnDev is further implementing its Rural Partner Synergy Approach and cooperates with other development‘organizations to train rural stove artisans to construct improved firewood stoves and set up small businesses to sustainably supply their communities with improved cook stoves.

EnDev Uganda is looking for one Improved Cook Stove Expert (Kampala) and one Field Assistant (Northern Uganda) to support the implementation of activities under its IOS programme component.

improved Cook Stove Expert — based in Kampala (with frequent countrywide travel)

Responsibilities
The expert is responsible for

  • Provision of technical support to ICS partner companies
  • Assisting the supervisor in his management and technical tasks The expert performs the following tasks:

Tasks
Technical and infrastructure support The expert is responsible for

  • Analyzing partners regarding their need for technical support as well as their aptitude for a partnership with EnDev Uganda
  • Designing production infrastructure — such as clay mixers and crushers, extruders, kilns, metal fabrication tools
  • including preparation of technical drawings, Bulls and procurement documents
  • Overseeing the installation of EnDev funded production infrastructure and induction of users
  • Developing tailored training modules, materials and consultancies for partner companies
  • implementing training measures and providing continued coaching and on-the-iob training complemented by regular meetings, exposure visits, quality checks etc.
  • ICS performance tests following international test protocols and their documentation
  • Assembly of demonstration and prototype household and institutional ICS
  • Technical monitoring of supported partner companies and other EnDev Uganda ICS partners
  • Preparation and management of consultancy contracts
  • Any other duties assigned and agreed to by GIZ

Knowledge management and M&E
The expert

  • Updates the head of project and the project team regularly on the progress of ongoing and planned technical and infrastructure support activities
  • Assists in communication, compilation of up to date information on project activities as well as the documentation of lessons learnt and approaches

Required qualifications, competences and experience
Formal education

  • Master in production, process or mechanical engineering, material science or other related fields
  • Relevant postgraduate qualifications are an added advantage

Professional experience

  • Minimum of 7 years of professional working experience in a similar position in the energy sector, including at least 3 years of active engagement with the private sector or a research institute
  • Good understanding of the East African household IOS sector and its trends
  • Experiences in working independently and harmoniously as part of a team Excellent practical and theoretical knowledge and experience about household lCS development, design and construction for charcoal and wood fuel, especially in regard lo thermodynamics, material properties as well as local availability and costs of materials
  • Proven experience in the optimization and mechanization of household. ICS production processes
  • Demonstrated ability to follow scientific procedures in regard to stove and material testing
  • Knowledge and experience in the fields of institutional and productive use ICS is an added advantage
  • Prior working experience with GIZ preferably or a similar organisation is an added advantage

Other qualifications

  • Very good, target-group oriented communication skills, both orally and written
  • Very good presentation skills
  • Excellent English language skills
  • Computer literacy with excellent knowledge of MS Office (especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Very good, proven CAD software skills
  • Willingness to continuous learning
  • Fluent Luganda skills are an added advantage
