Established in 1988, the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS is an internationally recognize: center of excellence for research on HIV infection and related diseases, contributing knowledge on the evolving epidemic, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention, and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. The Unit’s head offices are located at the Uganda Virus Research lnstitute- Entebbe Campus, and the main research activities in Masaka Kalungu, Kampala and Wakiso districts, including the peri-urban areas of Entebbe. The Unit is now seeking enthusiastic and experienced individuals to fill the following position:
Pathogen Analyst

Start date: As soon as possible
Contract Duration: Two Years (with possibilities of renewal depending on performance and availability of funds)
Job Purpose: With a strong interest in the application of Pathogen Genomics to public health, this role entails bioinformatics infrastructure setup, and the analysis and interpretation of large genomic and epidemiological data sets from both viral and bacterial pathogens, with a focus on the translation of outputs into utility for public health.
The candidate will provide leading bioinformatics support and development, data assessment (eg QC), data processing, production of robust pan-genomic resources for further local utility; In conjunction with partners, bioinformatics pipelines for the routine processing of WGS from raw reads through mapping, assembly, phylogeny production and ultimately the relation of phylogeny to epidemiology, will be setup. With an initial focus on pipelines for viral data interpretation, it is expected that the post holder will expand this remit to bacterial and other pathogen species. The post holder will lead the implementation process and actively further develop pipelines for local utility and integration of analysis to aid understanding of outbreaks and ongoing transmission.
