The Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) in Kenya and East Africa is a vibrant academic community dedicated to the provision of transformational learning, teaching and research that makes a leading contribution to improving the health“ and well-being of communities. Teaching faculty are all engaged in active clinical practice, research, and professional leadership with a specialty focus on delivery of upgrade programmes for working nurses and midwives.

The School is currently in the final stages of CUE (Commission of University Education) programme accreditation and start-up processes for a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (BScM) and is seeking to recruit suitably qualified and experienced academic midwifery faculty to lead and deliver the programme. The roles will involve preparation and delivery of teaching relevant to midwifery practice within a post RN to BScM programme for working nurses and midwives. Successful appointees will be focused on supporting and facilitating learners through their study to become degree-qualified midwives. Two key roles have been identified as essential to delivery of the RN to BScM programme, specifically:

Programme lead, Post RN to BScM Programme. The role holder:

  • Must meet the CUE appointment requirements for senior lecturer or above
  •  Will be a member of the School Senior Leadership Team

The full-time posts are based at SONAM’s campus in Nairobi, Kenya and offer excellent career development opportunities for faculty passionate about improving maternal child health outcomes and building clinical leadership and service delivery capacity within Kenya’s midwifery Workforce. Successful applicants will demonstrate excellent knowledge and skill in midwifery practice. They will be research active and will work well within a team possessing excellent teaching, learning and communication skills. Applicants must hold relevant professional qualifications and registration or eligibility for registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) is essential. CUE requirements for Senior Lecturer and Lecturer academic faculty are detailed in the University Standards and Guidelines 2014 http://www.cue.or.ke/  and include:

Senior Lecturer & Programme lead

  • PhD or equivalent degree qualification (or a Master’s degree qualification in special cases) in the relevant area from recognized/accredited university
  • At least five (5) years teaching experience at university level.
  • Six equivalent publication points
  •  Supervised at least four (4) postgraduate students to completion
  • Registered or eligibility for registration by the relevant professional body
