Makerere University, therefore, invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for Senior Management positions detailed below.

Reporting:
The University Librarian reports to the Vice Chancellor.

Role:-
The University Librarian is the Head of the University Library. He/she shall be responsible for the development, control, management and coordination of all library and information services of the University.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The University Librarian shall be responsible for the development, control, management and co-ordination of all library and information services of the University. In particular, the University Librarian shall perform the following functions:

  • Plan for and implement, in liaison with relevant Departments of the University, the various projects and programs of the Library
  • Familiarize him/her with the various programs offered by the University and liaise with the various School Heads on issues regarding the development of the Library, to ensure that relevant information materials are provided to the University Community 4
  • Chair meetings of the Library Committees Keep In constant touch with developments in the world of information to ensure that relevant and up to date information is provided to the University staff and students
  • Ensure the creation and maintenance of Library databases to enable the University community have easy access to the
  • University's information Resources Liaise with other information providing Departments such as information Technology Department, to ensure that information to the users is provided in a coordinated manner
  • Plan for Library Staff development in collaboration with the Director, Human Resources and keep Staff abreast with developments in their profession
  • Supervise Staff and hold regular staff meetings
  • Undertake any other related duties, as may be necessary to ensure the provision of efficient and effective Library and Information sen/ices in the University

Required Qualifications:

  • An Honors Bachelor's Degree in Library and information Sciences (US) or related discipline
  • A Master of Library and Information Sciences (US) or related discipline and
  • A PhD in Library and information Sciences (LIS) or a related discipline

Other Essential Requirements:

  • Should have mentored LIS professionals by teaching or supervising their Research work and/ or setting up LIS units
  • Five (5) new recognized Publications and/or conference papers ‘ ,
  • Information literacy instruction is required
  • Should have a track record of high integrity and leadership
  • Excellent analytical ability
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Very good tactical and strategic planning skills

Experience:
Applicants should have a minimum of twelve (12) years working experience, three (3) of which must be at Senior Management Level from a Reputable Organization. Experience at a Library of a reputable Institution of higher learning is an added advantage.

Tenure of Appointment:
The appointment shall be for a period of five (5) years with effect from the date of assumption of duty.

Age Limit:
Applicants should preferably not be more than 55 years of age at the time of submission of the application.

Remuneration:
The position of University Librarian is at the Makerere University M3 salary scale.
