The Aga Khan University (AKU) is a private, not-for-profit, international University first established in 1983; with 13 teaching sites in eight countries. AKU has seven hospitals and over 250 outreach health centers. The University is a non-denominational institution open to all, irrespective of religion, ethnicity, gender or national origin. Since 2001, AKU has offered academic programs in nursing, medicine and education for East African Countries. The Aga Khan University will establish a campus in Kampala, Uganda.

AKU invites applications for the following position;

Biomedical Engineer

Reporting to the Project Director, the Biomedical Engineer will initially work closely with the project team in the acquisition and installation of numerous biomedical equipment’s across the hospital during the construction and commissioning phase. Later he will be responsible for the maintenance and operations of said equipment.

Responsibilities:
During Hospital Construction & Commissioning Phase:

  • Review and check design development drawings, specifications & B.O.Q. from design and constructability.
  • Work closely with consultant to become familiar with design. Carry out value engineering whenever the opportunity rises.
  • Prepare purchase requisition, for all imported biomedical equipment. Obtain and review technical submittals in coordination with consultants and equipment planner, and prepare technical comparative summary for procurement approvals.
  • Supervise and inspect site works related to biomedical equipment and service installation such as CT, MRI, CathLab, X—ray machine, fluoroscopy machine, surgical and medical service pendants, isolated power system of equipment, UPS etc. Ensure that all installation and commissioning is done according to construction drawings and manufacturing standards.
  • Attend regular site meetings with consultants and contractors to resolve site issues. Give immediate decision in coordination with project manager. Avoid any delays.
  • Prepare punch list on completion of the work and ensure that all punch list items are attended by the contractor before issue of completion certificate.
  • Maintain and organize all installation, commissioning and services manual, and other documents such as approved submittals, test reports, transmittal letters, change orders, memos, design and shop-drawings particularly related to biomedical equipment and services.

During Hospital Operations Phase

  • Develop department policies, standard operation procedures, work instruction and protocol, kcy performance matrices for effective and efficient operation.
  • Carry out inspection, acceptance, inventory, maintenance, planning and scheduling of biomedical equipment, spares, and consumables on regular basis.
  • Attend break-down calls, perform corrective and preventative maintenance testing; calibrating other operational activities to ensure that equipment are fit for clinical operations.
  • Raise purchase requests for the spare parts and consumables. Plan ahead of time for critical spares/consumables to avoid critical equipment down time.
  • Supervise biomedical technician and assign them on maintenance activities on daily basis. Provide them with technical guidance whenever required. Hold regular department meetings to monitor department progress and utilization of team.
  • Deliver training sessions to user and department team members as per requirement and training plan.
  • Work closely with purchase department in contracting process. Monitor vendors during warranty and post warranty period as per the contract agreement and report the performance regularly to the management and other key stakeholders.
  • Carry out regular internal customer satisfaction survey to gauge operational effectiveness.
  • Develop monthly/quarterly management reports covering key performance indicators such as equipment uptime, schedule maintenance completion within time, breakdown maintenance completion within target time, customer satisfaction level, delay analysis, department balance score card, and so on.
  • Develop departmental operational and capital budget. Ensure department operates within allocated budget. Attend BVR meetings to appraise management about budget utilization.
  • Participate actively in affairs of institution wide quality management and work collaboratively in achieving international quality standards such as ISO-9000, JCIA, and so on.

Requirements:

  • BE or equivalent in Biomedical Engineering.
  • Minimum 4 to 6 years‘experience in maintenance/ management of medical equipment having BE in the relevant field.
  • Expert level knowledge of electro-mechanical and electronic fundamentals, medical equipment function and operation, safety in healthcare facilities and medical equipment troubleshooting.
  •  Interpersonal skills with positive attitude necessary to work effectively with clinical staff, vendors and fellow employees.
  • Analytical ability to determine equipment failure and malfunction, and ability to repair said equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Ability to write reports and prepare presentations on operational and technical issues.
  • Good communication skills in English (written and oral).
  • Supervision and planning skills.
  •  Team building and team work.
  • Proficient level computer skills (MS office, Networking and Hardware, HL7/DICOM/LIS/RIS) ' --- Considerable knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
