Job Title: Protection Specialist

Overall Purpose
The Protection Specialist will be leading the development and implementation of protection activities (other than Gender Based Violence protection activities) in the settlements hosting South Sudanese refugees. Protection activities aim mainly at reducing the risks of abuses and exploitation and various forms of violence for refugees and vulnerable members of the hosting community. Of particular importance are activities related to conflict prevention and mitigation, between the different groups of refugees as well as between refugees and hosting communities. Activities include training & support volunteers who conduct conflict prevention and mitigation activities, training leaders from host and refugee communities in conflict prevention and mitigation, supporting these leaders to develop and implement protection plans, setting community based surveillance systems in the settlements that work closely with Police and relevant authorities, identify “hot spots" or areas considered at risk in and around the settlements that can be made safer. The Protection Specialist will work closely with the GBV Specialist in order to ensure GBV is considered in the Protection Plans. In so doing, s/he will ensure that all activities are gender responsive. The Protection specialist will be based in CARE international Uganda Arua sub office.

Job and person specification (Requirements)
Post graduate/advanced qualification in a development field / Psychology, Social Work, behavioral Sciences or undergraduate degree with a combination of multiple years of experience in the field of development is required

  •  At least 5-7years of experience working in Social Support (PSS & SGBV) programs with direct contact to beneficiaries
  • Knowledge and understanding of the IASC Guidelines on Mental Health and Social Support (PSS & SGBV) Support in Emergency Settings
  • Experience of supporting and supervising others in developing programmes that promote gender mainstreaming, psychosocial support, SGBV interventions, peace building in a refugee context
  • Experience training others in Social Support is desired.
