Community Health Alliance Uganda (CHAU) formerly the international HIV/AIDS Alliance Uganda is registered as a national Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). CHAU’s portfolio of work spans technical and organizational capacity building of civil society organizations, community systems strengthening, SRHR/HIV integration, policy and advocacy.

its mission is to drive the national civil society response to health and HIV/SRH challenges by leading strong community action. CHAU's work focuses on Most at Risk populations or key populations: who are usually vulnerable and may not have access to services and information. CHAU has a strategic partnership with the international HIV/AIDS Alliance — a UK-based international NGO. The partnership has enhanced CHAU’s technical and institutional capacity and for over five years now, CHAU has built a track record of successfully managing and implementing development interventions with funding from DFID, DANIDA, SIDA, EU, and Positive Action for Children Fund and the Netherlands.

Executive Director

Role Overview:
The Executive Director provides vision, leadership, management and effective high-level national and international representation for Community Health Alliance Uganda (CHAU). The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the CHAU Strategic Plan. The ED role requires great understanding oi health, social and political context oi Uganda, East Africa and Africa region. The ED will work closely with the CHAU Board, manage a highly effective senior team, and also work in collaboration with other members of the international HIV/AIDS Alliance (IHAA) global partnership. The ED will embrace CHAU’s dual citizenship as both an organisation that is nationally registered and rooted but also a member of the global lHAA partnership.

Person Specification:

  • Bachelors degree in social sciences, Development studies or management
  • Masters degree in any relevant social Sciences Discipline from a recognized institution
  • A minimum‘ of 5 ‘years in the top management position of development work and health and poverty alleviation programmes with proven initiative, flexibility and enthusiasm in managing complex activities in a changing environment. Experience working as Executive director or Country Director for similar organisation is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated senior management expertise, including proven ability to develop the capacities of multidisciplinary professional teams undertaking comprehensive poverty alleviation strategy.
  • Proven experience on successful fundraising programmes with emphasis on regular giving and corporate fundraising.
  • Proven experience in managing complex financial control and a management systems with the budget size 13 million GBP
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic and long term planning and the ability to ensure that operational plans and activities meet targets and appropriately reflect longer term perspectives.
  • Proven experience of working and negotiating with Government officials and/or donors at all levels
  • Sound and up to date knowledge of development concepts, methodologies and techniques including demonstrated expertise in at least one specialist development field preferably knowledge of the HIV/AIDS sector.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills, including demonstrated ability to handle sensitive diplomatic and

  • Sound awareness of the political, social, economic and historic environment in which CHAU’s programmes are operating at both national and community levels.
  • Proficiency in English and a familiarity with the context of the country as it affects development strategies.
  • Strong leadership and management skills
  • Strong analytical/Problem solving, and management of crisis, conflict and risk
  • Fundraising skills with proven track recording in contract management from bilateral and multilateral donors.
