Given the conflict outbreak in South Sudan, IRC re-opened the Yumbe Field site office to support refugees being settled in Bidibidi, Imvepi and Omugo refugee settlement in Yumbe and Arua Districts respectively.
IRC is currently looking for enthusiastic, hardworking and self-motivated persons to join our team to support the effective delivery of the organization’s mission.

Job Overview/Summary:
Under the guidance of Reproductive Health Officer, the Registered mid-wife shall be responsible for provision of maternal and neonatal health services at the PHC facility and supporting the Reproductive health services in the community within the catchment population. Maternal and neonatal health services include: Antenatal care, deliveries, neonatal health care to prevent infection and promote health (infection prevention, exclusive breastfeeding, immunization, growth monitoring and check-up for common neonatal infections), postpartum care, and encouragement of breastfeeding/young child weaning & feeding, family planning, and managing obstetric emergencies including referrals as appropriate, & STIs management according to MoH guidelines. Among others, she will be providing counseling on FP and provision of modern methods. She will provide HIV/AIDS services including but not limited to counseling, eMTCT, EID and HAART services. She will directly supervise the enrolled mid wives.


Specific Responsibilities:
Provision of quality maternal, neonatal and child health services at the PHC facility that include: Antenatal care, deliveries, neonatal health care to prevent infection and promote health, exclusive breastfeeding, immunization, growth monitoring and check-up for common neonatal infections, postpartum care, and encouragement of breastfeeding/young child weaning & feeding.

  • Implement family planning counseling and provision of modern methods to clients.
  • Manage obstetric emergencies including referrals as appropriate & STIs management according to MoH guidelines.
  • Participate in EPI activities, vaccinations and EPI campaigns request of vaccines as well as making of reports.
  • Participate in conducting health education at the health facility and community based health care activities including planned outreaches, and school health programs.
  • Manage patients with confidentiality and adherence to professional code of conduct, policies and procedures and best practices in health care.
  • Conduct and report maternal, prenatal death audit surveillance and response in the health facility.
  • Conduct monthly requisitions and inventory in maternity and submit reports.
  • Ensure infection prevention and control is implemented according to MoH guideline.
  • Strengthen sexual gender based violence prevention and response in health facility.
  • Strengthen provision of adolescent sexual Reproductive Health services and information to adolescents at health facility.
  • Implement elimination of mother to child transmission of HIV (eMTCT).
  • Ensure referrals to CemONC facility are accompanied and referral information at health facility kept in file for future use.
  • Compile daily, weekly and monthly reproductive health report and submit to M&E team.
  • Participate in clinician ward rounds and provide bedside nursing care for admitted mothers.
  • Participate in the on-job training of other staff especially midwives, MCHW and also in organizing for sensitization in the health facility.
  • Supervise and conduct appraisal for midwives and MCHWs.
  • Conduct weekly/monthly maternity staff meetings to review activities.
  • Participate in any other activity as directed by supervisor.

Ensuring the non-disclosure of any information whatsoever relating to the practices and business of IRC acquired in the course of duty, to any other person or organization without authority, except in the normal execution of duty.


Note: - The role of Registered Mid Wife cannot be limited to the specific duties and tasks detailed herein. The success of the IRC’s humanitarian mission is the highest priority and all issues which arise must be addressed. Accordingly. Therefore, s/he will be required to manage all unforeseen issues and circumstances and remain Flexible to perform any other duties, as and when required.


Requirements / qualifications:

  • Must be a trained Midwife at registered level or its equivalent from a recognized Institution.
  • Must be registered with Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.

Experience and skills

  • At least two years of midwifery experience.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, customer service, interpersonal skills and respect for and receptivity to other cultures.
