Population Services International (PSI), and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) are implementing the Kampala Slum Maternal Newborn Health (MaNe) project which is a 3-year Implementation research project (30th September 2018 to 29th September 2021) that is testing innovative approaches to address the demand and supply side barriers affecting care seeking, effective referral and provision of quality care equitably for better maternal and newborn health (MNH) outcomes in urban slum settings in Kampala city. The project is being implemented in two of the five administrative divisions of Kampala city (Makindye and Lubaga).

We are looking for a suitable candidate fill the position of Project Research Lead for the MaNe – Kampala Slum project. .

Your contribution
• Develop research protocol(s) for the MaNe project work and secure ethical approval for the research project.
• Develop Monitoring, evaluation and learning plan for MaNe.
• Work with the Learning and Adaptation Lead to execute all research and knowledge management activities in line with PSI research standards.
• Train data collectors to collect high quality data; monitor data quality.
• Support data cleaning, analysis and report writing.
• Initiate, develop and disseminate knowledge management products (including leading the write up publication articles, manuscripts, abstracts for internal and external audiences) from MaNe’s research work.
• Initiate the development of mechanisms to monitor program processes and quality of programs through on site supervision of research sites.
• Initiate and conduct results to decision making sessions, document results and facilitate the development of action plans.
• Liaise with USAID Kampala and HRP research staff; PSI regional, national and HQ research staff, and research staff working across different implementation research projects under Health research partner programs to share knowledge, collaborate, learn and adapt good practices and learnings.
• Support use of information among program staff, Ministry of Health Uganda, communities of practice and USAID /w and USAID Kampala and other stakeholders working to Improve Urban Maternal and newborn Health.
• Provide leadership and strategic direction to the M&E portfolio through developing and strengthening M&E procedures in the project.
• Develop project conceptual frameworks and contribute to the design of strategies for fundable project proposals.


Key personal competencies
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated skills in research training and capacity building through technical assistance and mentoring.
• Demonstrated quantitative analytical skills, including use of Microsoft Excel, STATA, SAS, or SPSS, and skills in analyzing, interpreting and communicating information to a variety of stakeholders.
• Strong writing skills with publication record.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.
• Competence in project management and managing multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast paced and high-intensity environment.
• Demonstrated ability to think in innovative ways.


Qualifications
• Master’s degree in, public health, Maternal newborn health-related field, social work, community development, or a related field (PhD preferred).
• 5+ years of conducting and managing Maternal Newborn health research and evaluation, including research in community-based settings.
• Strong organizational and leadership skills.
• Experience in strengthening the demand for data and facilitating the use of information in the decision-making process at different levels.
• Demonstrated experience in facilitating meetings with broad groups of stakeholders including Government, International donors, Universities, programs and communities.
