About Teach For Uganda
Teach For Uganda (TFU) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing equitable access to quality education for children in low-income communities in Uganda. Through a two-year teaching fellowship, TFU recruits, trains, and places graduates from diverse academic backgrounds to serve as full-time teachers (fellows) in underserved primary schools. The program aims to improve foundational literacy and numeracy skills for children while developing fellows' leadership skills. Post-fellowship, alumni become lifelong advocates for quality education as community leaders, social entrepreneurs, and policy influencers. TFU currently operates in 10 districts, impacting over 74,000 children in 183 schools.
Position Overview
The Head of Programs is responsible for leading the design, execution, and scaling of the Teach For Uganda program. This includes ensuring effective recruitment, training, and support for fellows to improve student outcomes in the short term while preparing them for long-term leadership in education advocacy. The role involves strategic leadership, team management, partnership development, program coordination, and continuous improvement of program outcomes.
Performance Objectives
- Program Leadership & Strategy (25%)
- Develop and implement a comprehensive program strategy aligned with TFU’s mission and goals.
- Lead the fellowship program, including recruitment, selection, training, and ongoing support of fellows.
- Ensure program impact goals (student outcomes, fellow development, community engagement, alumni leadership) are met.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to refine the program model based on data and best practices.
- Oversee recruitment strategies to attract high-potential candidates and ensure a rigorous selection process.
- Design and implement training curricula for fellows and coaches.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- Partnerships & Stakeholder Management (20%)
- Build relationships with the Ministry of Education, local governments, schools, and organizations to support fellows and programs.
- Engage with funders, policymakers, and community leaders to advocate for the program and secure resources.
- Represent TFU at conferences and events to raise awareness and build partnerships.
- Collaborate with the Fundraising and Partnership Manager on joint proposals and project designs.
- Ensure field staff participate in district-level stakeholder meetings and submit monthly reports.
- Monitoring, Evaluation & Impact (20%)
- Implement a monitoring and evaluation framework to track program progress and impact.
- Assess student literacy and numeracy outcomes, fellow development, and alumni impact.
- Use data-driven insights to inform program improvements.
- Prepare and present detailed reports to the Managing Director, Board, and funders.
- Develop and maintain a knowledge management system for program learning.
- Conduct program monitoring and adapt strategies to enhance quality and impact.
- Oversee annual work plans, budgets, and risk management plans.
- Ensure timely submission of donor reports and deliverables.
- Team Management and Leadership (25%)
- Lead, mentor, and manage a diverse program team to ensure high performance and professional growth.
- Conduct monthly program meetings to review progress and coordinate activities.
- Oversee recruitment, training, and performance management of program staff.
- Foster a collaborative and mission-driven work environment.
- Contribute to organization-wide decision-making as part of the senior leadership team.
- Budgeting and Financial Planning (10%)
- Facilitate program planning and budgeting in collaboration with the Finance Manager.
- Monitor expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budgets.
- Train program staff on budgeting and financial tools.
- Review and approve requisitions and procurement requests.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- 7–10 years of experience in educational programming or program management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
Skills and Attributes
- Experience in teacher training, curriculum development, or educational leadership.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proven experience in the education sector, resource mobilization, and proposal writing.
- Ability to travel extensively for program monitoring.
- Knowledge of the Ugandan non-profit landscape and legal frameworks is an advantage.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and operational management software.
- Passion for TFU’s mission and values of educational equity.
