Background
Makerere University Lung Institute (MLI) is a center of excellence for Lung Health in the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University. Our mission is Lung health research that integrates disease prevention, clinical care and training in sub-Saharan
Africa.
MLI in collaboration with JSI will conduct the Quality of TB Services Study (QTSA), a
USAID funded national assessment that will assess the Quality of TB services in Uganda.
The study will be done across 200 facilities in 20 districts (Adjumani, Arua, Buikwe,
Bukomansibi, Buliisa, Bundibugyo, Hoima, Kalangala, Luwero, Mubende, Butaleja,
Gulu, Iganga, Kamuli, Kiruhura, Lamwo, Mbale, Mitooma, Ntungamo, Rukungiri).
MLI therefore seeks to recruit Social Scientists for this study.
Job Summary
The social scientists are primarily responsible for collecting qualitative data during the assessment. They will have contact with the respondents and have a great bearing on the quality of data collected and ultimately on the quality of data output.

Reports to: Study Coordinator
Engagement: Full time
Duration: 2 months .
Specific roles and responsibilities
Field work Preparation
Duties:
• Attend training workshop for research assistants
• Receive data collection tools (questionnaires) and/or equipment (tablet computers)
• Conduct piloting of the data collection tools
• Work with lead social scientist to finalize the focus group guides
• Drafting the data collection schedule to ensure timely completion of field activities.
Field work- data collection:
• Schedule time(s) with health facilities
• Respond to questions the participants may have about the assessment
• Send weekly reports to the study coordinator
• Liaise with the study coordinator to ensure availability of logistics for field work
After field visits:
• Ensure translation and transcription of the focus group discussions is done
• Work with the lead social scientist to perform qualitative analysis of the data
• Provide a detailed report of the focus group discussions

Required: qualifications, skills and experience
• Relevant degree (social science, public health,…)
• Experienced in qualitative data collection mandatory
• Prior experience in collecting TB data
• Computer literate
• Ability to work independently as well as an effective team player
• Experience working in rural settings for extended periods of time
• Ability to speak native languages in the area.
