JOB DETAILS:
Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) with funding support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). is implementing the USAID/ Uganda Combating Wildlife Crime (CWC) Activity ("Activity") in partnership with the African Wildlife Foundation(AWF), Natural Resources Conservation Network (neon) and Royal United Services institute (RUSl). The goal of this activity is to reduce wildlife crime in Uganda. in pursuit of this goal, WCS seeks to recruit qualified personnel in the following vacancies.
Vacancy: Counter Wildlife Crime Advisor
Place of performance: Uganda
Duration: 2 years, renewable subject to availability of funding
Reports to: Country Director.

Core Responsibilities
• The CWC Advisor will serve as the principal advisor to the CoP on matters relating to best practices in combating wildlife crime. transnational illegal wildlife trade networks and biodiversity conservation, including ensuring that the activities are in line with USAID's biodiversity policy. Other responsibilities include: e Ensure that the USAID Uganda GWC Activity achieves the most positive impact on reducing wildlife crime in Uganda.
• Provide technical support to WCS and its partners in implementing the CWO Activity, helping to them to build strategic alliances with regional and international security and law enforcement bodies and develop systems for intelligence information sharing.
• Align the Activity's support to CWO with the National Strategy to Combat Poaching, illegal Trade and Trafficking of Wildlife and Wildlife Products, USAID biodiversity policy and other relevant policies and strategies.
• Provide strategic guidance for capacity building to government counterparts in core CWC competencies and implement capacity building activities targeting UWA and the National Wildlife Crime Coordination Task Force (NWCCTF)
• Advice the CoP on key strategic regional. governmental and inter-governmental partnerships and networks to develop including building relations with key players.
• Monitor CWC/IWT developments, trends and protocols at international level {e.g. CITES. CBD. OMS. etc.) and advice the CoP as necessary.
• Provide strategic and technical guidance to WCS’s /WT/CWC program
• Represent WCS and the Activity in national. regional and global events and meetings, particularly those directly related to trade and wildlife crime.
• Supervise short-term technical consultants to offer technical capacity building to government in areas that may require specialized skills and knowledge {e.g. intelligence, investigations and prosecution).
• Ensure that cross-cutting issues such as environmental considerations, gender and youth considerations are addressed.
• In collaboration with the CoP development and implementation of annual technical work plans and budgets. tor the Activity. ensuring USAID and WCS priorities are addressed a.|1d contract budget compliance is achieved.
• Write and review a range of technical responsibilities and other publications For internal and external use.
• To represent WCS at relevant meetings with USAID and the partner government agencies as appropriate.
• Participate on the monitoring and evaluation oi technical aspects of the Activity.

REQUIREMENTS:
• Minimum of a Master’s degree in Wildlife Grime and Forensic Investigations, environmental law, international wildlife Trade and Tratticking.
• Minimum of 10 years of work experience with at least six of these in areas related to Wildlife. Forest and Fisheries crime. anti-tratticking or wildlife management and biodiversity conservation.
• Minimum of four years of experience in Attica. with an in-depth understanding of Uganda and East Africa.
• At least five years of demonstrated tract: record in wildlife crime investigations. intelligence gathering, analysis and reporting.
• Experience with developing and conducting capacity building trainings. mentorship and couching.
• Demonstrated experience of working with security and law enforcement institutions of government. inter-agency cooperation. and private sector companies involved with combating illegal trade in wildlife.
• Previous involvement in the implementation oi USAID projects activities is an asset
• English language proficiency required, competency in other languages used in East Africa is preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, with experience in writing technical reports. and delivering high-level presentations.
• Solution-oriented, sell-driven and ability to work with minimum supervision
• Good inter-personal skills and proven ability to work with teams of varied professional and cultural backgrounds.
