JOB DETAILS:
The research collaboration between Mbarara University of Science and Technology and Massachusetts Hospital, focuses on epidemiological research in the area of HIV/AIDS. There are two positions open for the description below:
Position Title: Nurse Research Assistant


This study aims to understand the impact of HIV infection on heart disease in sub-Saharan Africa. The responsibility of the Nurse Research Assistant position is to ensure successful implementation of study protocols in collaboration with the US and Ugandan Principal Investigators and the Mbarara-based research team.

The Incumbent will be responsible for participant recruitment, consenting, enrollment, data collection, entry, and quality assurance, conducting rapid diagnostic testing and phlebotomy. This position will report directly to the Project Coordinator.


Educational Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field is required;
  • Written and spoken fluency in English and Runyankole is required.
  • Experience in conducting research surveys and working in a medical environment is a requirement;
  • Experience in HIV/AIDS programs and services is highly desirable;
  • Experience with word processing on a computer and with use of smartphones and/or tablets is a must;
  • Experience with clinic-based field research is a plus;
  • Significant experience with data management and quality control, is required.
  • Experience with radiologic procedures, including CT scans, is a plus;
  • Competency with phlebotomy is required;
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision is essential;
  • Knowledge of research ethics is essential.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Recruit, enroll, and consent participants for the study;
  • Verbally administer questionnaires to participants and record responses with electronic tablets;
  • Perform clinical chart review for data collection;
  • Draw blood and handle specimens for laboratory testing;
  • Conduct clinical procedures, such as rapid malaria testing and tuberculin skin testing;
  • Collect and enter laboratory result data;
  • Travel with participants to the radiology center in Nsambya for supervision during CT procedures;
  • Participate in data quality assurance practices, including weekly review of data entry;
  • Manage and disseminate results to participants and his/her authorized healthcare provider;
  • Work closely with the Project Coordinator to monitor the effectiveness of protocols;
  • Participate in weekly meetings with the study staff and Principal Investigator;
  • Store all files in a protected file cabinet in the study offices;
  • Provide weekly reports of study work to the study staff and Principal Investigators;
  • Conduct all work in compliance with internationally recognized ethical standards;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position duration: 12 months at 100% effort with potential for renewal/extension based on employee performance; expected start date: October 2018.
