Job Purpose:
o The Head of Risk will be responsible for establishing, implementing, and maintaining an effective risk management framework across the company's operations.
o This role requires a strategic thinker with a strong background in risk assessment and mitigation, particularly within the microfinance environment.
o The successful candidate will oversee the identification, measurement, monitoring, and reporting of risks associated with our product range, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.

Job Responsibilities:
o Risk Framework Development
• Design and implement a comprehensive risk management framework tailored to the specific risks associated with boda loans and car logbook loans.
• Develop, review, and update risk policies, procedures, and internal controls in alignment with regulatory standards and business objectives.
o Risk Identification and Assessment:
• Continuously identify, assess, and prioritize credit, operational, compliance, market, and reputational risks.
• Collaborate with the credit and underwriting teams to develop and refine risk assessment models and loan underwriting guidelines.
o Credit Risk Modelling and Metrics
• Develop and maintain robust credit risk models to measure key metrics including PD, LGD and FPD for both boda and car logbook loan portfolios.
• Validate and continuously recalibrate these models to ensure they accurately capture the credit risk and performance trends of the portfolio.
• Work closely with the analytics team to integrate these metrics into overall risk reporting and decision-making processes.
o Monitoring and Reporting
• Establish key risk indicators (KRIs) and reporting mechanisms (dashboards, periodic reports) for effective risk monitoring.
• Provide regular risk reports and insights to senior management and the board, highlighting emerging risks and recommending actionable strategies.
o Portfolio Management
• Oversee the analysis of the loan portfolio to identify trends, assess risk exposures, and recommend necessary adjustments to maintain a healthy portfolio.
• Implement stress testing and scenario analysis to evaluate the impact of adverse economic conditions on the loan portfolio.
o Compliance and Regulatory Oversight
• Ensure all risk management practices comply with Ugandan financial regulations and international best practices.
• Liaise with regulatory bodies, auditors, and other stakeholders regarding risk management matters.
o Training and Culture
• Develop and conduct risk management training sessions for staff across all levels to foster a strong risk culture within the organization.
• Promote a proactive risk management mindset throughout the organization.
o Collaboration and Strategic Input
• Work closely with other department heads (e.g., Credit, Operations, Compliance) to ensure integrated risk management across all functions.
• Participate in strategic decision-making, providing risk insights that support business growth and innovation.

Person Specification:
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.
• A master's degree or professional certifications such as CFA, FRM, or similar is highly desirable.

Education, Training, Skills & Experience:
• Experience:
• 5-10 years of experience in risk management, preferably within financial services or microfinance sectors.
• Proven experience in managing risks associated with consumer or asset-based lending, with a strong understanding of boda loan and car logbook loan dynamics.
• Demonstrated expertise in developing and managing credit risk models with a focus on PD, LGD, and FPD metrics.
• Skills and Competencies:
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to translate complex data into actionable risk insights.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the capacity to influence senior management and board members.
• In-depth knowledge of risk management frameworks, regulatory requirements, and best practices in the microfinance industry.
• Proficiency in risk management software and analytical tools.
• Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
• Reporting Structure:
o The Head of Risk will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and will work collaboratively with the executive management team.
• Work Environment:
o This is a full-time position based in Kampala, Uganda.
o Occasional travel to branch offices, industry conferences, and regulatory meetings may be required.
