The TOPOWA project is a 5-year long interdisciplinary research study, funded by the NIH (2022-2026), to address the social drivers of mental illness in low-income settings. The key study question asks if vocational training and women empowerment initiatives such as entrepreneurship and vocational skills will improve mental health trajectories for women in poverty (see conceptual model below). This ongoing community study in Kampala comprises multiple modes of data collection. We include surveys, a neuroscience experiment, wearable garmins, biomarkers data, a daily diary and GIS. The study implementation is conducted in collaboration with our long-term partner, the Uganda Youth Development Link.
