JOB DETAILS:
We are looking for a competent individual to support RRA’s communications work!
S/he will be will be responsible for implementing RRA’s Communication Strategy and Plans that includes overseeing and supervising the implementation of tasks in branding, visibility, public relations and reputation management both in digital and non-digital spaces.
Position: Volunteer: Communication, Advocacy and Digital engagement.
Area of expertise: Human rights, Telecommunications systems, Public information and reporting.
Duty station: Kampala with 50 percent travels to Karamoja and the Albertine Graben.
About Us:
Resource Rights Africa (RRA) is a research and development organization formed in 2016 to advocate for the promotion and protection of people’s rights in Uganda. RRA works towards ending discrimination, inequality, abuse of power especially by business entities and advocating for the suitable use of natural resources including oil and gas, minerals, land, forests, water bodies as well as flora and fauna. RRA is a growing organization that is aspiring to be regional in public policy research and analysis in a range of areas including business and human rights, extractives governance, land, climate change, and taxation.
The core business of RRA is to undertake community driven advocacy on Responsible Business Conduct (RBC) and respect for human rights especially in vulnerable communities, undertake public policy research and analysis on contemporary and emerging public policy and governance issues that have a significant impact on national development.
RRA’s Vision is, “A just and peaceful world free from human rights violations”.
RRA’s Mission is to empower local communities to achieve a dignified life through creating synergies with duty bearers for equitable access to natural resources in Africa.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
• Lead in organization’s communications work for awareness and influence by ensuring that relevant organization communications materials such as brochures, learning briefs, success and human-interest stories, factsheets, and infographics are developed and disseminated on time to the target audiences.
• Develop and maintain relationships with media outlets (print, electronic and web-based), including drafting press releases and organizing media events, to increase coverage of RRA programs and activities.
• Coordinate and monitor internal communications via a quarterly newsletter and yearly annual report.
• Develop content on RRA’s online platforms including the social media, and website.
• Contribute to the finalization and production of high-quality material, donor reports, media supplements, documentaries, audio clips, pictures, and other audio-visual communication materials.
• Regularly update RRA website, Facebook and Twitter accounts, and with relevant content and quality photographs in a timely manner;
• Support the development/production of information and communications instruments and materials for awareness-raising campaigns, including briefing materials and press releases in coordination with the supervisor.
• Support RRA publication activities, such as drafting articles, content management, design to ensure quality production.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Key Competencies:
• Minimum Bachelors’ degree or equivalent in communications, journalism, public relations, or any other relevant field is required;
• Ability to craft and compile content to make it accessible, compelling and engaging for key audiences.
• Proficiency with social media, mobile platforms and multimedia content to reach RRA’s diverse stakeholders.
• S/he has exceptional English communications skills with the ability to produce high-quality reports, publications, presentations, documentaries, and other communications materials;
• S/he shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations;
• S/he has experience in organizing and coordinating public events and/or in drafting communications for press releases, and web presence is desirable;
• S/he has basic understanding/interest in human rights, natural resources governance, Responsible Business Conduct (RBC), Regional and International Mechanisms including a sound knowledge of the political, social, economic, and historic environment in which RRA is operating both national and community levels;
• S/he has ability to identify sources for data collection, analyze information and develop editorial content and support to final product design to fit different channels and audiences;
• S/he speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors’ language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed;
• S/he has experience in Public Relations and reputation management including the media in effective two-way communication–from supporting press needs, to advancing strategic partnerships which uphold and improve the reputation of RRA before other stakeholders;
• S/he will be responsible for implementing RRA’s communication strategy and plans: This includes implementation of tasks in branding, visibility, public relations and reputation management among others both in digital and non-digital spaces;
• S/he can deliver digital communication across all critical traditional and new media channels, and social media;
• S/he understands technical communications and can effectively support other departments, and where required extend this support to selected external partners.
