Overview:
The Community Conservation & PACE Officer post is the key field-based implementing officer for the project entitled “Wildlife Protection and Sustainable Livelihoods for Communities Neighbouring Murchison Falls Protected Area, Northern Uganda. This project is being funded by the UK government and Tusk Trust. S/he will have lead responsibility for the Tusk Trust-UCF components of the project, which include facilitating vocational training scholarships, implementation of the Pan African Conservation Education (PACE) programme, and development of community-park relations with the Uganda Wildlife Authority. As well as liaise with district local government in Nwoya and Pakwach district, and the Send A Cow Uganda team based in Pakwach.
The three-year project is already halfway. The Community Conservation & PACE Officer will be contracted for the remainder of the project period. S/He should have extensive experience of field-based conservation and community development work, as well as experience in implementing large grant-funded programmes.
Accountability:
The Community Conservation & PACE Officer reports directly to UCF’s Project Manager in charge of the Living with Wildlife Programme. The UK Aid Match funded project is implemented in partnership with Send A Cow and Tusk Trust.
Also, the Community Conservation & PACE Officer will supervise the Project Officer stationed in Pakwach.
Duties & Responsibilities
Project Implementation:
• Deliver PACE outreach programme to schools and communities around NW MFNP.
• Organize quarterly stakeholder meetings (to include UWA, communities, Send A Cow Uganda, and district local governments of both Nwoya and Pakwach.)
• Facilitate 60x vocational training scholarships at the Pacer Vocational College
• Oversee the development of a PACE demonstration site at Pacer Vocational College
• Coordinate school education trips into MFNP with UWA
• Coordinate community sensitization trips into MFNP with UWA
• Produce PACE materials and t-shirts for the school visits
• Facilitate community-park committee meetings, and ultimately the development of Park-Community Committees.
• Ensue project funds are treated with integrity and expenditure is incurred I line with the project budget
• Ensure that correct health and safety standards are observed when carrying out the above duties, applying risk assessments when appropriate and acting accordingly.
Communications and Partner and stakeholder relationship management:
• Compile and submit project and programme financial and narrative reports in a timely manner
• Participate in appropriate forums to share learning and best practice
• Liaise closely with Project Manager
• Cultivate strong relationships with key stakeholders
• Create and maintain a working culture of open and honest dialogue between all parties
• Uphold UCF and Tusk Trust’s, and the project’s overall strong reputation
Experience and Skills required
• Relevant University Degree
• Five or more years’ field-based experience in conservation and community development and livelihoods programmes
• Experience working with local communities concerning community- based natural resource management.
• Experience working in the NW Murchison Falls National Park area is an added advantage.
• Experience in managing large-grant funded programmes
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills
• Fluent in English. Fluency in Alur or Luo are an added advantage.
• Excellent community mobilization skills and stakeholder relationship management
• Must possess a valid driving permit.
