Our client International Gorilla Conservation Program IGCP a coalition of Fauna & Flora International and WWF invite applications for the position of Country coordinator
Reports to: Program Manager
Duty Station: Kabale, Uganda
Grade: B1

Goal of the Position:
To ensure the conservation of the critically endangered mountain gorillas, primarily through the strategic objective that by 2020 sufficient and high quality habitats secured and available to support flourishing populations of mountain gorillas.

Responsibilities:
Though it is a generalist position, the Country Coordinator will play a major role of conservation leadership within the Bwindi Mgahinga Conservation Area in the regional context.

Specific tasks:

  • Liaise with lGCP’s direct governmental partner, the Uganda Wildlife Authority, at both the level of the BMCA, as well as headquarters, and relevant Ministries and Authorities as necessary for the purposes of ensuring program objectives and activities are coordinated with and contribute to national initiatives
  • Liaise with district level and local government staff within the BMCA for purposes of Communicating program objectives and activities, as well as encouraging their active participation to ensure coordination of and support to conservation activities
  • Work with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and local communities to mitigate Human-Wildlife Conflict
  • Assist all partners in the utilization of monitoring and research information in decision-making
  • Support lGCP’s efforts to strengthen ranger-based monitoring and community-based monitoring
  • Coordinate lGCP‘s support to law enforcement anti-poaching in both strategy and operations within the Bwindi Mgahinga Conservation Area, as well as in coordination of trans boundary efforts in law enforcement] anti-poaching
  • Facilitate lGCP’s “Gorilla Water” projects in the Bwindi Mgahinga Conservation Area
  • Represent IGCP as necessary at national-level forums on conservation issues, adding value based on lGCP’s collective knowledge and experience
  • Contribute and drive policy debates on issues related to the conservation of mountain gorillas
  • Contribute to planning, monitoring and evaluation requirements of the Program
  • Provide support to consultants commissioned by IGCP .
  • Technical contributions to proposals under development, Network and link with other relevant NGOs, projects and initiatives
  • Be highly engaged in relevant forum, events and activities, so that IGCP remains to and proactive in addressing emerging threats to mountain gorillas together with the Program’s partners.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum BSO, MSc preferred, in conservation or related field
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in conservation

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Experience in wildlife and law enforcement monitoring and strategies, preferred
  • Experience with human rights based approaches to conservation, preferred
  • Strong report writing skills and communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record, preferred
  • Willingness to work as part of a multi-cultural team
