Duty station: Water For People in Uganda office
JOB SUMMARY:
Water For People is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) that works with people and partners to develop innovative and long-lasting solutions to the water, sanitation, and hygiene problems in developing countries. The organization strives to continually improve, experiment with promising new ideas, and leverage resources to multiply its impact.
Water For People has secured funds from the UNOPS through the Sanitation and Hygiene Fund (SHF) to finance the project- Accelerating Access to improved Sanitation and hygiene Services using Market Based Sanitation Approach in Uganda from 2023 to 2025 .
It is against this background that Water for People in Uganda is hiring a grant Accountant for the project with the following qualification and competencies:
Position objective:
The Grant Accountant – is responsible for all financial transactions, from fixed payments and variable expenses to bank deposits and budgets. In collaboration with the Finance and Administration Manager, the Grant Accountant will contribute to auditing financial documents and procedures, reconciling bank statements, calculating tax payments, and managing petty cash
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Accounting and finance
• Oversees bills with cost share component and allocate them consistently to the SHF grant.
• Conduct bank reconciliation activities, and all administrative related tasks, Preparation of wire transfer requests in accordance with policy.
• Maintain the accounting system of Sanitation and Hygiene Fund, consistent with financial regulations rules, policies, and procedures. Oversee the bookkeeping function including
maintenance of the general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
• Conduct monthly financial reconciliation, working with the finance officer for CP in preparing consolidated monthly financial reports for country program and other routine financial reports as needed.
• Ensure that all payroll deductions such as personal taxes and other salary deduction, are paid within permissible time.
• Assist SHF grant partners with proper financial management as needed.
• Preparing monthly declaration, VAT refund
• Administer and track the SHF Petty Cash account.
• Maintain grant financial files and support annual audits.
• Immediately report to the Finance Manager and/or Grant coordinator any deviations or irregularities that could arise.
• Vehicle usage reports?
• Fixed assets or inventory assets purchased by SHF funds?
• What about payroll for the staff paid by SHF?
Grant management-related duties
• Manage and develop all aspects of donor account management by developing and implementing strategies to maximize the giving potential of donor, while adhering with the grant management process.
• Maximize partners’ relationships by becoming deeply familiar with the donor’s requirements and partners ‘commitments to the project.
• Provide all required data to the Finance Manager and program team on time and ensure accurate expenditure reporting donor- required red format.
• Track revenue and expenditures against the grant budget on monthly basis.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED:
• Bachelor’s degree in either Accounting, Commerce, Business administration (Accounting or Finance option), with at least five (3) years of experience.
• Working with an international NGO is an added value.
• Computer experience, knowledge of at least one accounting system, and ability to access e-mails and internet services.
• Advanced computer proficiencies with Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
• Common sense to make judgments about a situation requiring deviations from routine tasks.
• Self-starter and ability to undertake tasks without intensive supervision.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• Ability to read, write, and speak English
EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:
• Position is based at Water For People in Uganda office.
• Regular travel to program sites.
