The person will be based at UVRI campus in Entebbe.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week minimum) Target Malaria Principal Investigator
Until 31 January 2024 (renewable) with six months' probation period
Background on Target Malaria
The Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) is a leading health research institution in Uganda, based in Entebbe. UVRI is a collaborating partner in the Target Malaria consortium. The consortium includes a diversity of researchers - molecular biologists, medical entomologists, population geneticists, protein engineers, social sciences researchers as well as risk, regulatory and stakeholder engagement experts. Our teams are researching cutting-edge genetic technologies for vector control in the fight against malaria.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Insectary Manager/Coordinator will be responsible for all insectary- based operations including maintenance of genetically modified mosquitoes and delivery of associated research program. They will be responsible for ensuring that the insectaries operate as designed and are maintained in a way that prevents escape, protects worker safety and supports the objectives of the Target Malaria project. They will ensure meticulous planning, execution and alignment of all insectary related activities including liaising with colleagues in Uganda and Target Malaria consortium teams in Europe and USA.
The manager controls access, is aware of all activities occurring in the insectary and anticipates future needs for equipment and supplies. The role is a challenging one with wide-ranging and high level responsibilities.

2. Accomplished in experimental design and execution with proven track record of data analysis, technical report writing and publications.
3. Knowledge of Mendelian genetics and molecular biology, ideally with practical expertise of molecular techniques
4. Managerial experience in leading research team, planning and budgeting. Strong team working ethic and collaborative skills to facilitate working alongside our field entomology teams, regulatory, risk management teams, mathematical modelers and project management.
5. Working in regulatory environment and commitment to implementing and maintaining highest quality standards, leading by example.
6. Ability to prioritise and deliver your work independently with acute attention to detail.
7. Confident in dealing with wide variety of internal and external stakeholders in conveying complex science.
8. Willingness to travel nationally and internationally for scientific meeting and collaboration with Target Malaria partners.
9. The Insectary Research Manager/Coordinator (IM) shall ensure.
10. Support with Protocol development, Strategy development and implementation
11. Proper planning and budgeting for insectary activities and ensuring that these plans are constantly up to date and communicated to all staff. Lead and manage the development and implementation of studies, analysis and report writing.
12. Identification of opportunities for insectary related topics for publication and supports drafting of manuscripts for peer review publication for the insectary team.
13. Write quarterly reports, annual reports and progress reports to regulators, funders among others.
14. Ensures insectary related activities are in compliance with in-country legislation, regulatory requirements & other international standards. Timely procurement of all insectary supplies and equipment.
15. Collaborate with the field teams in establishing best practices for mosquito rearing, release & monitoring post release to support project development pathway.
16. Ensure timely equipment logging and servicing.
17. Environmental conditions in insectaries are constantly monitored and maintained at the specified set points. Some of the conditions that must be controlled and logged are temperature, relative humidity and light. Ensure that mechanisms are in place to ensure maintenance of the colony in the insectary at any point in time.
18. Management of insectary personnel to ensure that the insectary has the right number, quality of personnel and are well trained for the functions they are assigned to.
19. Assist in the creation and implementation of a quality management environment.
20. Continuous monitoring for incidents and timely reporting to all stipulated persons or authorities
21. Ensure that manuals, SOP's and guidelines are in place, updated and understood by all staff.
22. Ensure that documentation and records maintenance is correctly done at all times by routine monitoring.

2. Preferable PhD or equivalent experience ideally in mosquito vector ecology/ entomology
3. Experience in accreditation of laboratories or research facilities is an added advantage.
