Numida’s mission is to build digital financial services that enable 1 million small business owners across Africa to achieve their dreams. We have started by building the best working capital loan product in the market targeting financially excluded micro and small businesses. Our proprietary credit models and tech-enabled underwriting processes mean that instead of borrowing from informal lenders or family, business owners download the Numida app, apply in minutes, and receive capital within a day. There’s 20 million of these businesses in Africa representing a $5 billion market opportunity and traditional microfinance is failing them. We have figured out how to score and disburse unsecured loans to cash-based businesses that have no digital transaction history, with excellent collection rates. Since 2021 we've provided more than $60 million in working capital to 60,000 businesses in East Africa.
We are Uganda’s first YC-backed startup and are also backed by world class investors such as Serena Ventures, Onafriq, Breega, and 4Di Capital.
We have operational offices in Kampala, Uganda and Nairobi, Kenya with a product and engineering team distributed between Uganda, and Canada. We’re launching additional markets and products over the next 2 years as we work to achieve our mission by 2030.

We are looking for a smart, passionate, and effective Frontend Engineer.

This role will primarily be responsible for crafting and maintaining highly responsive and user-friendly native mobile applications. As a Frontend Engineer at Numida, you will concentrate on developing polished frontend solutions for our primary app, ensuring they are intuitive, efficient, and visually appealing. You will be the domain expert and owner of our frontend domain and collaborate closely with our product and innovation teams to optimize user experiences and refine application functionalities. This role is pivotal at Numida, and we are seeking someone with robust technical expertise, exceptional communication skills, and dedicated to delivering top-notch solutions.

Responsibilities:
• Frontend Development:
o Lead the creation of new frontend features and enhancements, ensuring code quality, maintainability, and scalability.
o Assume full responsibility for the frontend codebase, including its architecture, design, and ongoing maintenance.
• Collaboration and Integration:
o Partner with product managers, designers, and backend engineers to deliver cohesive and seamless user experiences.
o Facilitate smooth integration between frontend and backend systems.
• Mentorship and Knowledge Sharing:
o Mentor and guide other/junior developers, providing support on technical challenges and encouraging continuous learning.
o Create and maintain comprehensive documentation of the frontend codebase, architecture, and development processes to support knowledge sharing and onboarding.
• Standards, Practices, and Quality Assurance:
o Define, document, and uphold coding standards and best practices to ensure team-wide consistency and quality.
o Conduct thorough testing of frontend code, including unit, integration, and end-to-end tests, to ensure reliability and prevent regressions.
• Innovation and Performance Optimization:
o Stay informed about the latest frontend technologies and industry trends, advocating for the adoption of new tools and techniques to improve development processes and product quality.
o Enhance frontend performance by identifying and addressing bottlenecks, implementing efficient coding practices.
• User Experience and User-Centric Design:
o Work closely with the UX/UI team to implement user-focused designs, ensuring the final product meets user needs and delivers an outstanding experience.

Skills & Qualifications:
• Must have
o Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
o 5+ years of experience in frontend design and development
o Proven experience mentoring junior developers and establishing best practices
o Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team
o Proficiency in JavaScript
o Experience with mobile application frameworks such as React Native
o Experience with web libraries such as React
o Familiarity with state management solutions like Redux and Redux Sagas
o Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Nice to have
o Experience with API query languages like GraphQL
o Familiarity with frontend typing libraries such as Flow or TypeScript
o Experience with JavaScript testing frameworks like Jest
o Knowledge of cloud hosting platforms such as AWS and containerization technologies like Docker
o Familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL
