Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Community and Welfare, the Social Worker is responsible for advocating, listening, protecting, the children that we work with, while engaging other stakeholders in the process. The ideal Social Worker will be competent in prioritizing and working with little supervision, self-motivated and trustworthy. The Social Worker is to be a role-model for the children, providing relevant mentorship, character development, academic, social, spiritual and personal support to the children and guardians through education, empowerment, health care and advocacy.
They will also be responsible for partnerships management with partners and other stakeholders.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Develop positive and meaningful relationships with children through understanding the child and scheduling one on one counseling and mentoring sessions on a regular basis depending on the needs of the child.
• Listening and advising children on the academic, personal, health and spiritual challenges they face through building trust and confidence with the children.
• Conduct an annual child re-assessment/ follow-up for each child within their environment; school, village, home comparing these assessments with the previous ones and make recommendations to the Supervisor on way forward for each child.
• Review each assigned child’s home situation through home visits and make recommendations for extra child support i.e. when there is need for extra financial support for scholastics, uniforms, shoes and other necessities.
• Track, analyze and compile a termly academic performance report for each child and come up with clear plans on how to help the children that are performing below the acceptable average marks.
• Working with the Supervisor and other staff participate in the design and delivery of Child Empowerment Programs, Career Guidance workshops, Community Service and other empowerment programs
• Conduct home visits/assessments with the guardians/parents to ensure that the children are receiving the necessary care and support from the parents i.e. academic, personal, emotional, hygiene, feeding etc.
• Follow up with parents on their responsibilities towards top-up payments, attending meetings, attending students’ activities and meetings at school, following up with teachers on the child’s progress.
Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences, SWASA, Development Studies, Education or related field.
• 2+ years of related experience implementing child focused empowerment projects in rural communities.
• Proven ability to work well with children, parents and other stakeholders and ensure that maximum satisfaction is achieved.
• High level presentation, communication and networking skills especially in optimising high level and key relationships internally and externally.
• Counselling and mentorship skills.
Skills and Abilities
• A self-starter, who can manage their time and tasks independently and responsibly.
• Must be resourceful and take initiative even when given minimal direction.
• Approachable, empathetic and non-judgmental
