The Regional Service Centre in Entebbe (RSCE) is part of the UN Department of Operational Support (DOS), providing scalable and client-oriented services in human resources, finance, transport, ICT, and logistics to UN field missions across Africa.

Position Overview

The ICT Technician (Individual Contractor) will support the ICT Operations Unit in maintaining structured cabling infrastructure, ensuring efficient connectivity, and supporting communications infrastructure at the RSCE.

Duties and Responsibilities

Structured ICT Cabling:

  • Install and terminate copper (Cat5e/Cat6) and fiber optic cables per TIA/EIA and ISO/IEC standards
  • Install wall outlets, racks, patch panels, and fiber enclosures
  • Route, secure, and manage cables through trays and conduits
  • Perform testing and certification of installed systems using tools like Fluke testers
  • Create and maintain documentation including diagrams, maps, and as-built drawings

Troubleshooting and Maintenance:

  • Diagnose and repair cable faults
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and system inspections
  • Maintain accurate asset and inventory records

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Install trunking, outlets, faceplates, and perform cable dressing
  • Perform voice/data outlet maintenance and support LAN wiring projects
  • Support grounding, bonding, and lightning protection: including testing resistance, preparing earth pits, installing grounding rods, and interconnecting electrode systems
  • Assist with UPS/battery replacements, camera maintenance, PMP installation, and related support tasks

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Experience: Minimum 1 year in ICT infrastructure including hands-on work in cabling, fiber splicing, or grounding systems
  • Technical Skills:
    • Use of splicing machines, LAN installation tools
    • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 and documentation tools
  • Desirable Certifications & Experience:
    • Technical certification in ICT, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
    • Vocational training in cabling or infrastructure
    • Valid rigger’s certificate
    • Experience with UN Peacekeeping or other international organizations is an asset

Languages

  • Required: Fluency in English (oral and written)
  • Desirable: Knowledge of French
