LIT TRAIN Programme Gender Adviser


The Role:

Mastercard Foundation’s Leaders in Teaching (LIT) initiative aims to transform secondary education across Africa by building the capacity of teachers and school leaders to enable young people to acquire skills, knowledge, and competencies necessary to access dignified and fulfilling employment. Using a multi-partner implementation model, LIT will address critical challenges in the teacher lifecycle through four key programmatic pillars: (1) Teacher Recruitment, (2) Teacher Training, (3) Education Leadership and Management, and (4) Teacher Motivation.

The British Council will lead the TRAIN pillar, and with downstream partners Luigi Giussani Foundation (LGF), Edukans and Brainwave, lead efforts in innovation, competency-based curriculum, gender-responsive pedagogy and career guidance.

The postholder will be responsible for: (i) supporting the development and implementation of the programme gender equality strategy and EDI action plan, (ii) providing expert advice and support to the programme to deliver gender equality outcomes; (iii) contributing to and managing research, thought leadership and advocacy for gender equality themes across the programme; (iv) building the skills and capacities of programme members to integrate gender equality and inclusion into their activites; and (v) supporting the development and implementation of programme systems and processes to ensure gender equality is addressed.

Main accountabilities but not limited to the following:  

Strategy & Planning

  • Provides high quality analysis of global, regional and Ugandan trends and evidence on gender equality and empowerment of women and girls to contribute to the development of the programmes’s strategies and plans.
  • Leads on the development and delivery of the programme Gender Strategy and the EDI Plan.

Relationship and Stakeholder Management

  • Develops and maintains excellent relationships and communication with internal stakeholders including programme lead, pillar leads and partner EDI leads to build a clear understanding of their needs and experiences, to enable effective advice and tailored support to meet gender equality commitments.
  • Builds and manages reputation, relationships and partnerships with key gender equality stakeholders relevant to the programmes and the Ugandan education sector

Consultancy, Analysis & Problem Solving

  • Supports the development and implementation of systems and processes in place across the programme to monitor and meet our gender equality commitments. across all pillars.
  • Provides professional advice, guidance and opportunity-development support to help the scoping, contextual analysis (including gender analysis) design and delivery of gender transformative activities that deliver programme gender outcomes
  • Provide professional advice, guidance and support to integrate gender perspectives and outcomes for women and girls/gender transformative approaches into the programme.

Sector/subject expertise

  • Actively builds knowledge and professional networks to maintain an excellent understanding of relevant developments, stakeholders and opinion formers in the field of gender equality and empowerment of women and girls (in both Uganda and internationally), to support the creation of high-quality product/project/programme activities and position the programme as a credible authority in this area.
  • Contributes to understanding of the British Council’s programmes that contribute to gender equality/empowerment of women and girls and lead the sharing of good practice.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

  • To actively contribute to an inclusive and anti-racist programme culture, being aware of your own biases, and taking action to mitigate against these. Ensuring people feel valued and are treated equitably, with support for people’s well-being and mental health.
  • Understand the British Council’s approach to equality, diversity and inclusion and how it applies to your role, making time for learning and development relating to EDI and anti-racism.

Leadership & Management

  • Drives integration of measures to support equality issues within teams and the programme

Requirements of the role:

  • First degree or equivalent in a relevant field
  • English CEFR Level B2
  • Knowledge of gender equality issues globally and in SSA and at least one of the British Council areas of work (Arts, Education and English) relevant policies and the intersection between gender and other inequalities
  • Experience of applying knowledge of gender issues to research and programme design and delivery in an SSA context.
  • Experience of delivering capacity building and training activities – specifically on gender equality
  • Experience of promoting equality, diversity and inclusion within project planning and delivery including use of appropriate tools
  • Understands and promotes ethical conduct, and able to ensure that own behaviour and the behaviour of others is consistent with these standards and values of the British Council including those set out in our EDI priorities.

Desirable:

  • Relevant degree/ Masters level qualification eg International development, gender studies.
