Uganda Youth and Adolescents Health Forum – UYAHF has recently established an adolescent health clinic in Mbale. The clinic is geared towards supporting UYAHF to achieve its vision of creating a gender equal world with healthy and empowered young people. .

Overall goal of UYAHF Adolescent Health Clinic
The UYAHF Adolescent Health Clinic strives to be a leading center for excellence for quality, rights based adolescent friendly health services, well-being and research in Eastern Uganda and Uganda large. The clinic’s commitment is hinged on UYAHF’s passion to protect and improve the health and well-being of adolescents including enhancing their demand, access and uptake of quality sexual reproductive health services and SGBV support services.

Services provided at the UYAHF Adolescent Health Clinic
The clinic provides general health care services to the public put with emphasis on sexual and reproductive health services and SGBV support services for adolescents and young people both boys and girls. Key services provided by the facility range from; Family planning, antenatal perinatal and postnatal care services, immunization, breast cancer and cervical cancer screening, HIV and STI screening, treatment and management, malaria and TB screening and treatment, general outpatient diagnosis, community outreaches among others.
The facility also provides basic mental health services, Sexual and gender-based support services including post rape care support and counselling for victims.

Focus on SGBV
UYAHF has a strong focus on addressing Sexual and gender-based violence (GBV), harmful social and cultural practices such as child marriage and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) that abruptly end the childhood of girls. The 2016 Uganda Health and Demographic Survey (UDHS), shows that 49% of women between age 20 and 24 years, were married before their 18th birthday, and 12% before their 15th birthday. More than 1 in 5 women aged 15-49 have experienced sexual violence at some point in their life compared to men, with less than 1 in 10 (UDHS, 2016).
GBV hinders women’s and girls’ full enjoyment of reproductive health rights. Victims of sexual violence may need emergency contraceptive pills for any unintended pregnancies; treatment for sexually transmitted infections including HIV; medical attention for other injuries including mental and psychological trauma.
Social norms in the communities that favor negative male masculinities also need to be challenged. The negative social norms often accept violence such as wife battering, child marriage, FGM, and in some cases rape as normal societal occurrences. UYAHF believes that all women and girls have the right to lead vibrant, dynamic lives where they can be bold in the pursuit of their aspirations.
