FFI Uganda has received funding from Darwin Initiative to implement a project within the Albertine Rift for three years titled`` Community – led approaches to reforestation benefiting chimpanzees and livelihoods ``
Job Tittle: Agroforestry Extension officer, Uganda
Reports to: The Program officer – Uganda
Location: Hoima
Purpose:
To support the delivery of components of the forest connectivity for chimpanzees project in Uganda technically on; (i) agroforestry and reforestation approaches, (ii) primates monitoring and (iii) Human-Wildlife Conflict mitigation measures. The post holder will provide flexible, bespoke support to a range of project and initiatives, to ensure their effective development, monitoring and evaluation, in order to maximize the impact for chimpanzee conservation .

Specific Duties:
Implementation
• Support the implementation of the agroforestry and reforestation aspects of the Uganda PFOA engagement programme in and around Hoima, Masindi and Kikuube districts – Uganda.
• Lead on the planning and design of riverine corridor reforestation with native species in two critical chimpanzee corridors.
• Support project staff in the delivery of human-wildlife conflict mitigation trainings.
• Collaborate with FFI and project partners on the development of best practices for chimpanzee corridor reforestation.
• Ensure that reforestation species are both endemic to the project area and suitable for the purposes of improving chimpanzee corridor movement.
• Advise project staff and communities on best practices when it comes to crop mixture for agroforestry systems.
• Provide direct technical input through the design and delivery of training and other activities relevant to agroforestry activities, including on-going support / mentoring of members of the project team and other stakeholders (including local community members) as required.
• Oversee the logistical/practical aspects of seedling production (native species, naturalised timber species and commercial agroforestry species) and distribution.
• Assist the project team in land use planning related activities.
• Oversee the cultivation of selected crop (most probably ginger) in demonstration plots and train farmers in cultivation technique for better crop yield.
• Support the delivery of sustainable agricultural practices by working with agricultural extension agents to train model households.
Monitoring, Evaluation and learning
• Lead on the development, implementation and monitoring of tree survival and crop yields (land equivalent ratio) for each of (1) timber/fuelwood agroforestry, and (2) commercial agroforestry.
• Play a key role in the design and assessment of environmental performance by establishing a robust baseline, collecting follow-up data, and providing recommendations for adaptive management on a needs basis, that will be followed by end of project Participatory Impact Assessment studies.
• Report on monthly, quarterly and annual agroforestry and reforestation work plans and activity budgets.
• Compile all project documentation relevant to agroforestry and reforestation activities for the Project Manager to report back to project partners and the donor.
• Support all monitoring and evaluation components of this project when relating to agroforestry, reforestation, and primates monitoring activities.
• Support the project manager and the wider project team to monitor performance and impact indicators.

Person specifications
• A degree or equivalent qualification in agriculture, agroforestry, forestry, conservation/natural resource management
• Experience with wide range of donor reporting systems and compliance requirements
• Excellent writing skills and ability to produce quality and timely reports as well as make valuable contribution towards development of conservation and livelihoods focused technical and funding proposals
• Field experience in agriculture/agroforestry, forestry, conservation or relevant research, preferably in a developing country context
• At least 5 years of experience and proven hands-on track record in the fields of agricultural/agroforestry practices, forestry, natural resources, Environmental Management or related programming
• Strong prioritisation, attention to detail and time management skills, with proven ability to work to multiple deadlines and a clear focus on delivery of outputs
• Fluency in written and spoken English
• Administrative skills, including budgeting, financial administration and reporting
• Excellent writing skills, including ability to write proposals, reports, popular articles and technical briefs in English
• Strong verbal communication and networking skills, including ability to deliver presentations
• Ability to build and manage relationships with a wide range of individuals and organisations, in a range of contexts including governments, NGOs, community groups and businesses


Desired skills
• Proficiency in local languages, Runyakitara, Luganda, Alur and or Lugbara
• Understanding of methods for project monitoring and evaluation
• Skills in building partner capacity and/or facilitating discussion groups
• Basic data handling and/or analysis skills
• Prior experience in working with CBOs, NGOs or governments in agricultural, natural resource and Environment management related programs
• Experience planning and/or delivering workshops
• Experience with small-holder farmers and supporting them with on farm practices
• Experience of working effectively with different types of partner organisations, including national and local NGOs, government agencies, and community-based organisations
• Experience of working with remote teams
