Project Description.
The Sustainable Energy for Smallholder Farmers (SEFFA) in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda" is a multi-country project with a duration of three years (2021-2023) and implemented by GIZ. SNV and RVO and co-financed by the IKEA Foundation's partnership with Energizing Development (EnDev). The project focuses on addressing the core problem of the lack of access to sustainable and affordable energy technologies and services for productive use of energy (PUE) based on scalable and innovative business cases, which is preventing smallholder farmers and related local businesses of the agricultural value chains to achieve increased productivity. higher income and improved climate resilient and food-secure livelihoods.
The SEFFA project aims to support scalable, innovative business cases for using renewable energy services and technologies for irrigation, cooling and drying, in the dairy and horticultural value chains across Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda.

The desired impact of the project is: "By using sustainable and affordable energy technologies and services, smallholder farmers and related local businesses of agricultural value chains improve their livelihoods, increase their resilience to climate change and contribute to GHG emissions reduction."
SNV Uganda is undertaking implementation of the project in the dairy value chain with emphasis on PUE technologies for cow milking and cooling of milk and its products in South-West and Central Uganda, while GIZ is undertaking implementation of the project in the horticultural value chain focusing on irrigation, post-harvest handling and cooling in Central and Eastern Uganda. Through this project, SNV Uganda is piloting and testing business cases for using solar energy in dairy cooling and cow milking, with three cases under consideration:
• Case 1: Dairy Cooperative with non-renewable energy based cold storage switching to solar hybrid (diesel) energy technology.
• Case 2: Dairy enterprises in off-grid areas with un-reliable or no energy sources using solar for cooling milk and milk products.
• Case 3: Smallholder dairy farmers using solar powered milking machines.

Purpose of the assignment
The overall purpose of the assignment is to document the economic, financial, technical, and social viability of the business cases and package the findings appropriately to provide evidence-based learning and adaptation for scaling innovative business cases for using renewable energy technologies and services.
