Background and rationale
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Uganda Health Systems Strengthening (UHSS) Activity is a five-year USAID-funded contract designed to support the improvement in the performance of Uganda’s health systems through technical assistance that improves leadership and accountability for results in public and private health sectors at the national, sub-national, and community levels; implement innovative interventions that increase efficient use, governance, and management of key health system resources including human resources for health, finance, equipment/infrastructure; and strengthen state and non-state community health systems that are critical for improved and quality health services. UHSS is currently in its final year of implementation and is seeking the services of a Graphic Designer to support project close-out activities on a short-term assignment.
Description of assignment
• Production of original/high-quality graphic design materials to disseminate the work of Uganda Health Systems Strengthening (UHSS) Activity. The materials will follow USAID branding and graphic guidelines and will be used to improve/develop the design and layout of publications, web content, presentations, and other communication products. These include posters, presentations, and informative leaflets, among others.
Methodology
• The expert is expected to work in close consultation with the UHSS team as well as the Knowledge Management Specialist.
• In-person meetings with the UHSS team will be necessary to agree on deliverables. Actual materials to be delivered may be worked on at agreed locations and delivered either physically or via email.
• Copyright and ownership: All materials produced, and other intellectual property will be solely owned by the UHSS activity. Any material provided to the expert will remain the property of the UHSS activity.
Expected deliverables
• Responsible for creating illustrations, infographics, figures (e.g., graphs, flow charts), tables, pull quotes, and other graphics to be used for the event and social media. Additionally, they should determine how to best use icons and other visual elements in the layout.
• Graphic design/layout for the UHSS handouts: project brochure, agenda, awards, sub-project brochures, project fact sheet, privacy policy, external report, and folders among others.
• Graphic design/layout template for any web-project sites, social media posts, and web articles.
• Printing packages (all layout and design files, including pre-press for the printing house and web versions) for publications and other communication products, such as reports, boards, brochures, handbooks, leaflets, charts, photographs, posters, folders, social media posts, etc.
• Identify and incorporate photos that are powerful and relevant to the product/theme.
• Inputs for video production on the work of UHSS. Responsible for designing visual elements (e.g., figures) and sharing those files with the videographer for insertion in the video
Duration
The contract will be effective from date of signing for a period of one month.
Working arrangements Institutional Arrangements
The consultant will report to the UHSS Chief of Party and Senior MEL Advisor on a regular basis once he/she joins the team. The consultant will liaise, interact, collaborate/meet the staff at UHSS and partners. UHSS will also support the consultant in the following:
• Access to all reports and data relevant to the assignment. These will include donor reports, project documents, and donor reports.
• Support and assist to gain access to relevant stakeholders for consultations to the extent possible.\
• Expectation for a certain number of rounds for revisions, working with the editor and incorporating the team's feedback.

Education
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (Journalism, Mass Communication or Marketing, Art, Design and graphics, or similar).
• Fluency in English is required.
Experience
• Strong theoretical and practical background in graphic design, including the use of design software such as Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere Pro), CorelDRAW,web design tools such as Dreamweaver and Flash, etc.
• Extensive experience with graphic design services for USAID and familiarity with the Agency's branding requirements.
• Demonstrated experience and comfort with producing creative, high-quality web design, page layout, and other graphic design for a range of clients.
• Clear and mature style of design, demonstrating an understanding of the communication requirements of UHSS.
• A strong portfolio that reflects a diversity of high-quality products and clients
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in graphic production from start to published/printed product with knowledge of printing processes (offset and digital) and color management.
• Advanced knowledge of design best practices, capabilities, and trends.
• Good understanding of new and evolving technologies and digital platforms.
• Familiarity with copyright requirements.
• Knowledge of standard software packages, including Microsoft 365 (Word, Access, Visio, etc.) and Adobe Acrobat.
• Working experience in international development or environment is desirable.
