Position: Coordinator – Forests and Biodiversity Programme
Reporting to: Conservation Programmes Manager
Supervision: Project Managers
Grade: B1
Location: Kampala with frequent visits to Albertine Graben
Department Mission: To ensure the development and implementation of the WWF Uganda Conservation Strategy to the highest standards.
Major Function:
To provide overall coordination, technical guidance, fundraising and supervision of the WWF UCO Forests and Biodiversity Programme and staff to ensure timely delivery on the programme strategy through efficient and cost-effective implementation of a coherent and well-articulated portfolio of projects activities .
Major duties and responsibilities
• Lead the developing of the F&B action plan in-line with the WWF UCO strategic plan
• Provide technical oversight , direction for the expansion and growth of the WWF UCO Forests and Biodiversity Programme and Projects in line with the WWF –UCO strategic plan and donor requirement
• Provide technical oversight in capacity strengthening of UCO and its partners on Forest and Biodiversity issues in line with WWF UCO guidelines
• Provide technical support to government and other relevant stakeholders in developing comprehensive and harmonized policy, legal institutional and financial frameworks for sustainable forest and biodiversity development in Uganda in line with WWF UCO guidelines
• Coordinate planning, design, and implementation of targeted research studies to generate new information and innovative ideas for promotion of sustainable forest management and related issues relevant to WWF UCO’s interventions in Uganda
• Lead the implementation of the Forest and Biodiversity Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting systems for monitoring programme performance, progress and impact of projects in line with the set performance indicators, donor requirements and WWF guidelines
• Create strong alliances and networks with civil society organizations, public and private organizations for concerted efforts and coalitions on Forest & Biodiversity
• Prepare Annual and quarterly programme reports, document and share best practices, experiences and periodically advise management, key stakeholders on Forests & Biodiversity related issues in line with WWF and donor requirements
• Develop and Monitor the implementation of a consolidated ‘Forests &Biodiversity’ annual work plan and budget and as well as monitor the integration of related activities in line with UCO objectives, financial guidelines and donor requirements
• Initiate, develop and prepare fundable grant program/ project proposals, concepts including pipelines in collaboration with other members of the organization (technical teams) and ensure sustained growth and expansion of the programme in line with WWF mission, strategic objectives and donor guidelines
• Lead in planning, organizing and coordination of campaigns, dialogues and negotiations on topical issues in forests& biodiversity in line with WWF guidelines and priorities
• Build and maintain a competent “Forests & Biodiversity team ” and its partners through providing backstopping, coaching and mentoring, giving constructive feedback, capacity development, in line with the WWF Human Resources guidelines
• Lead in cultivating relations between UCO and relevant stakeholders including government, CSOs, private sector on matters relevant to forestry and biodiversity
Required Qualifications
• A post graduate degree in forestry, biodiversity studies, environmental science, natural resources management or any other relevant discipline
• At least 7 years of professional experience in environmental conservation preferably in Forestry and Biodiversity conservation related work
• Ability to effectively fundraise and experience of managing large scale donor funded projects
• Knowledge of market-based approaches to forest conservation is an added advantage
• Experience in civil society capacity development , lobbying, advocacy, natural resources management is an asset
• Experience in engaging with different stakeholders including government, CSOs private sector and local communities
• Fluency in English and must be conversant with relevant computer applications

• Experienced with demonstrable technical knowledge and skills in managing programmes
• Excellent people management skills
• Highly developed conceptual, analytical and innovative problem-solving ability and excellent oral and written communication
• Practical experience in organizational development,
• Extensive analytical skills and ability to transform emerging issues into information for communication, lobbying and advocacy for policy change
• Proven interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people from different backgrounds
• Working Relationships
• Internal: Interacts and closely works with the WWF UCO Freshwater, Energy, Climate & Extractives team, Operations team at the Country Office and field offices,
• External: Interacts with various partners and Network persons relevant to the forest and biodiversity programme.
NB: This job description covers the main tasks and conveys the spirit of the sort of tasks that are anticipated proactively from staff. Other tasks may be assigned as necessary according to organizational needs.
