The Strategic Information Technical Support (SITES) Activity is a seven-year project that was awarded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to Social & Scientific Systems Inc. (SSS), a DLH company. The purpose of the SITES Activity is to facilitate, promote and enhance evidence-based programming and reporting in Uganda’s health system, particularly in areas of Family Health (MCH, FP, Nutrition, malaria, WASH, TB), HIV/AIDS as well as orphans and vulnerable children (OVC).

Overview
The editor will be responsible for reviewing and improving the written content of USAID-SITES’ documents, ensuring accuracy, clarity, consistency, and adherence to style guidelines. The consultant will collaborate with USAID-SITES’ technical team to enhance the overall quality and effectiveness of written materials.

Responsibilities
1. Review written materials, including but not limited to, articles, reports, web content, and presentations, for grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and formatting errors.
2. Ensure consistency in style, tone, and voice across all documents.
3. Verify factual accuracy and proper citations where applicable.
4. Suggest and implement edits to enhance clarity, readability, and coherence of the content.
5. Collaborate with the USAID-SITES’ staff & other subject matter experts to address queries and clarify content as needed.
6. Provide recommendations on reorganizing or restructuring content for improved flow and impact.
7. Adhere to USAID-SITES’ specific style guide or established industry standards.
8. Assist in the final proofreading of documents before publication or distribution.
9. Track changes and maintain a record of edits made for reference and transparency.
10. Attend regular meetings or communications to discuss project progress, address concerns, and receive feedback.

Qualifications
1. Proven experience as a copy editor, preferably in health programming.
2. Proficiency in English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax.
3. Familiarity with USAID writing style guide(s) or standards and ability to apply them consistently.
4. Excellent attention to detail and the ability to spot errors and inconsistencies quickly.
5. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with different stakeholders.
6. Time management skills to meet project deadlines and manage multiple documents concurrently.
7. Proficiency in using relevant software/tools, including Microsoft Office.
8. Portfolio showcasing previous copy-editing projects or writing samples.
