JOB DETAILS:
Medical Research Council/Uganda Virus Research Institute and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine Uganda Research Unit (MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit) was established in 1988 to improve the understanding and control of the HIV epidemic in Uganda and globally. Since its establishment the Unit has grown, and now also covers research on vaccines, immunology, virology and non-communicable diseases. The Unit is part of LSHTM, has core funding from the MRC, and works closely together with UVRI, which hosts the Unit on its Entebbe campus. The Unit’s scientific activities are delivered via three broad research Themes (Viral Pathogens, Vaccine Research and Non-Communicable Diseases) to maximise cross-programme fertilization, allowing for greater flexibility in response to the evolving research landscape and enable the delivery of studies addressing priority health challenges in Uganda, greater Africa and worldwide. The Unit, with a compelling record of scientific achievement and a suite of cutting-edge platforms and capabilities, is uniquely placed to play a leading role in the continued growth of the scientific landscape in Africa, while directly supporting the development and training of talented African researchers.

LSHTM and MRC are now seeking to appoint a new Director to provide scientific vision, leadership and management of the Unit, playing an instrumental role in the development and delivery of its scientific strategy and objectives. The Director will ensure the Unit’s leading-edge contributions to research at the scientific forefront and its position in the local, regional and wider international landscape is strengthened, providing leadership and nourishing external collaborations and interactions and successfully attracting external funding to leverage the core investment. The Unit Director will provide strong strategic leadership to inspire, motivate, develop and support staff at all levels and encourage them to achieve their full potential in research, education and delivering excellent professional services. While maintaining strong partnership working with LSHTM and the MRC, a key focus of the Director will be moving towards greater autonomy and independence and building stronger links with strategic partners in the region.

The Director will be an inspirational leader with an outstanding international research track record in a field relevant to Unit’s mission and a demonstrable track record of senior leadership in an academic or research-intensive context. The successful candidate will have proven ability to develop a clear strategic vision and the experience and enthusiasm to build on current Unit strengths with an established record in attracting research funding to further support Unit’s development. The new Director will bring demonstrable leadership skills and an inclusive approach to leadership, with the ability to coalesce diverse individuals and groups around a vision, bring them along and ensure effective implementation. The Unit Director will work collegiately and respectfully with colleagues and partners of all cultures and backgrounds, demonstrating a caring attitude towards the community.

LSHTM and MRC have engaged the services of Perrett Laver to assist with the appointment process of the Director of MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit.
Application is by submission of a curriculum vitae and a covering letter of application, addressing the job description and person specification. The closing date for applications is 9am GMT on Monday 21st August.

Applications will be reviewed by the Selection Panel at the end of August. Final interviews will take place in person at the unit in Uganda later in the year. All reasonable expenses will be covered.
