Job Purpose
The Graduate Trainee – Design Engineer supports the development of electrical distribution system designs under the guidance of senior engineers. The trainee will assist in preparing technical drawings, conducting basic calculations, and learning design standards and tools, while gaining hands-on experience in electrical system design for new infrastructure and system upgrades.
Impact
The Graduate Trainee contributes to the design process by supporting the preparation of layouts, documents, and technical analysis. Their involvement enhances project documentation, accuracy, and quality while building the trainee’s practical knowledge and readiness for future engineering roles.
Key Result Areas
- Assist in preparing basic electrical distribution designs and layouts for substations, transformers, and power lines.
- Participate in creating technical specifications and simple diagrams using AutoCAD or similar tools.
- Support basic load flow, voltage drop, and transformer sizing calculations under supervision.
- Gain exposure to design tools such as ETAP or PSS/E through supervised use or training sessions.
- Collaborate with the design and planning teams to understand project requirements.
- Attend site visits or project meetings to observe how designs align with practical implementation.
- Study applicable industry standards, codes, and company policies related to electrical system design.
- Apply safety considerations and regulatory knowledge when assisting in designs.
- Assist in maintaining design files, preparing draft reports, and organizing technical documentation.
- Help prepare presentation materials or summaries for internal project updates.
- Observe and assist in preparing preliminary cost estimates and resource planning for design activities.
- Learn about budgeting and the financial considerations of design work.
- Support in identifying basic design challenges and brainstorming possible solutions under the guidance of a senior engineer.
- Observe how design changes affect project outcomes and learn how to adjust accordingly.
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team including planning, operations, and external contractors.
- Communicate design updates and seek feedback for improvement.

Person Specifications
Academic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field.
- Must have graduated within the last three (3) years from a recognized institution
Experience:
- No professional experience required.
Competencies:
- Strong interest in power system design and electrical infrastructure.
- Basic knowledge of distribution networks and electrical components.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to learn and work under guidance.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation.
- Team-oriented with good communication and collaboration skills.
