JOB DETAILS:
Position Title: Laboratory Technologist
Position Summary: The incumbent will serve as a Laboratory Technologist in the Microbiology Laboratory (JCRC) located at Plot 101, Lubowa Estate, off Entebbe road. The Laboratory Technologist will serve and train under the immediate supervision of the Microbiology Head, the incumbent’s responsibility will be to perform laboratory tests to obtain data for use in research and diagnosis in the Microbiology laboratory. Additionally, she/he is expected to improve the current Quality practices in Microbiology laboratory while maintaining accreditations of all JCRC laboratories.
This position will require the incumbent to be knowledgeable in all laboratory activities, GCLP, CAP, ISO standards and any related QMS literature relevant to the lab, as well as other JCRC activities that pertain to the laboratory and its Quality Management Plan. The incumbent may be required to assist the senior staff in teaching new requirements and other Quality Management techniques, while continuing with the performance of the Microbiology Laboratory activities.

Job Purpose:
The position is to coordinate and participate in a variety of complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in research, and in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and promote the goals of JCRC.

Essential Duties & Training Responsibilities:
• Proficiently carry out testing on samples in the laboratory as per study requirements.
• Coordinate and participate in the performance and interpretation of complex technical duties in support of medical laboratory testing; record determinations and results for review by laboratory management and physician/caregiver staff.
• Participate in specimen collection when required according to test requests.
• Set up, evaluate and operate current and new equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific laboratory tests and assume adequate responsibility to maintain operations including preventive maintenance.
• Coordinate the preparation and quality assurance of culture media, chemicals, reagents, stains and solutions as appropriate.
• Evaluate collected laboratory data and prepare reports assessing accuracy, completeness, timeliness, progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
• Participate in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques.
• Provide technical guidance and instruction to students, interns, residents, staff and other employees; arrange teaching or rotation schedules for students and new employees.
• Monitor Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Safety and Inspection Control practices to assure compliance with internal and external regulations.
• Maintain sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for performance of duties; clean and maintain standard laboratory equipment.
• Provide advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation, and verification of specimen quality and test results.
• Ensure safety information is disseminated promptly to all lab personnel
• Ensure proper waste handling and disposal
• Other duties as may be assigned.

Position Specifications:
This position requires a complete understanding of all JCRC policies, as it is necessary to abide and enforce necessary applications in the lab in regard to QA/QC and CAP accreditation. A high degree of professionalism is required of this position as well as interpersonal abilities to motivate and train individuals to perform in an efficient and productive manner.
Required Education and Knowledge: Bachelor’s degree in Bio/Medical lab Technology/Sciences with 2 years’ experience in a laboratory setting from a reputable organization. She/he should be computer literate and registered with the Allied Health Professional’s Council (AHPC).
Physical Ability: Ability to professionally communicate in writing and verbally or other means deemed appropriate. The ability to travel to and from work is required, which includes JCRC and collaborative sites if necessary. The incumbent will from time to time be required to lift some lab supplies/equipment to and from the lab to the required destination as his/her superiors may direct him/her. The incumbent is also expected to be able to sit for extended periods of time.
Supervisory Controls: The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Laboratory supervisor/ Head Microbiology Section.
