The Leadership Academy of South Sudan (LASS) is a secondary school located in Nimule, South Sudan. LASS is committed to developing transformational leaders through our LEAD model. We seek to raise a generation of learners who will lead with integrity and serve their communities with purpose.
We are seeking a Literature Teacher to join our team and support the academic development of our students through passionate teaching, mentorship, and discipleship.
Role Overview
The Literature-in-English teaching position is proposed to enhance the teaching and learning of Literature in English in the school using the competency-based learning model. The teacher will prepare schemes of work, lesson plans, Guide lessons, assess learners’ progress, provide guidance and counselling to learners, manage students’ discipline, participate in co-curricular activities, support implementation of the Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Discipleship (LED) pillars, and other administrative and departmental activities.
2.0 Key Responsibilities:
- Lesson planning and assessment
- Prepare Scheme of work, lessons plan and instructional materials to deliver effective lessons to the learners as allocated to you on a timetable and to provide remedial support as necessary.
- Present literature-in-English lessons in a clear and engaging manner and ensure learners grasp subject concepts and ideas in accordance with the prescribed curriculum.
- Design and conduct assessments of student’s work, activities, maintain a progress of student performance and provide constructive feedback.
- Identify and select a wide range of teaching strategies, learning resources and equipment to accommodate diverse learning styles to enhance students’ understanding and performance in the subject/activity.
- Conduct extensive research on new topics, maintaining up-to date subject knowledge and reviewing new curriculum materials to equip students with relevant and up-to date knowledge.
2.2 Student Mentorship and Development
- Model a high standard of personal Christian conduct and integrity through lifestyle and professional relationships.
- Manage student’s behaviour in the classroom and on school premises and apply appropriate and effective measures of encouraging appropriate behavior.
- Offer counselling services to students, to navigate, academic, personal and social challenges
- Provide guidance, support and mentorship to students by being approachable, showing genuine interests in their lives, listening to their concerns, helping them to set goals and by acting as a role model.
2.3 Administrative
- Maintain accurate and up to date records of student’s progress, attendances and grades and ensure you document incidents and events in a school.
- Prepare and submit reports on student’s progress, lessons plans and curriculum implementation
- Adhere to school policies and guidelines in place.
- Actively participate in school committees set up to achieve a set of goals to improve school rating including curriculum committee, Staff development, Academic committee, recruitment committee among others
- Communicate with Parents/ guardians about students’ progress, behaviour and school activities and events in appropriate forum.
- Participate in and organize extracurricular activities like, sports, debates, club activities, practical entrepreneurship and other school social activities and trips outside the school.
- Attend school programs and activities e.g. visitation day, teacher’s workshops, student’s seminars, prefects vetting, open forum etc.
2.4 Professional development
- Supervise and mentor/coach colleagues to support their professional growth e. g teaching assistants, trainee teachers and newly qualified teachers.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to enhance teaching skills, subject knowledge and pedagogy
- Maintain and update on curriculum changes and stay informed on curriculum changes, revisions and new updates in the education environment.
2.5 Take up any other duty that may be assigned by the administration from time to time.
3.0 COMPETENCES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Must be a practicing, Christian.
- Willingness to station, and work in South Sudan.
- Willingness to learn and grow under instruction of teaching faculty and in a professional environment,
- Must have NO record of conviction in any Court of Law, nor any record in relation to abuse or neglect of children,
- Computer literate, Communication, report writing, Integrity, teamwork, flexibility, ability to work long hours, child respect and protection.
- Able to adequately represent LASS on different forums while upholding the integrity of the school.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Education degree specializing in Literature in English from a recognized institution of learning.
- Must have scored Distinction in the subjects applied to teach in “O” level and/or “A” or “B” in UACE examinations.
- Mastery of the subject
- At least one (1) year of practical and related experience in similar position.
