JOB DETAILS:

OVERALL JOB PURPOSE
Provide a safe environment for patient care, involve self in establishing and maintaining standards of practice as per unit requirements and ensure effective communication within the multidisciplinary team.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
1. Registered with the Ugandan Nurses and Midwives Council & holds a current practicing license for Nursing.
2. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
3. Basic Life Support (BLS) training
4. Two years of working experience as a nurse in the NICU (desirable).
5. Identify babies that require C-pap or ventilator and setup.
6. Support in performing neonatal procedures, administering drugs and resuscitating babies.
7. Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
8. Excellent verbal and written skills.
9. Excellent interpersonal skills with all the multi-disciplinary team, patients and relatives.
10. Competent knowledge and skills within general nursing care
11. Cognitive skills as related to the position

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Prepare and keep the operating room always ready for surgeries including emergency cases.
2. Arrange all the necessary tools/instruments and machines as required
3. Prepare patients for surgery and assist as assigned.
4. Prepare the surgical suite and layout surgical instruments
5. Assess and prepare patients, review procedure to be performed, answer patient questions and review lab values for patient
6. Assist the surgeon during surgeries and provide the right surgical instruments the surgeon may need during the operation.
7. Provide direct patient care, monitor closely patient vital signs and condition after surgery and administer treatment as prescribed.
8. Monitor patient progress and identifies any changes in status, acting on those changes to insure patient comfort and safety.
9. Promptly record and report symptoms and changes in patient’s conditions and vital signs to the shift in charge and the managing surgeon.
10. Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records by documenting as per HMH standards
11. Maintain counts on sponges, needles and instruments to ensure no loss of items according to the hospital policy.
12. Be extremely careful with the disposal of sharps as per infection control & waste disposal policy.
13. Verify instrument counts after surgery, Complete charting and transport patient to the ward.
14. Assess patient status and provide discharge instructions for all day-care cases
15. Liaise with patients’ loved ones regarding the surgery if required
16. Transport used tools for sterilization and return all used machines to storage

EQUIPMENT AND MACHINERY
1. Be familiar with the inventory processes for equipment on the unit and check equipment as assigned.
2. Be familiar with International Nursing standards.
