JOB DETAILS:
Department Physiotherapy
Reports To Head – Physiotherapy

OVERALL JOB PURPOSE
To attend to people affected by injury, illness or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice and get involved in the service development and quality control by representing the department within the organization.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
• A qualification in Physiotherapy
• Must be registered with Allied Health Professionals’ council of Uganda
• Technical expertise in the physiotherapy field
• General knowledge of handling physiotherapy equipment
• Good and demonstrable understanding of PMC mission, vision, values and beliefs
• Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal/written)
• Effective and demonstrable leadership skills
• Ability to effectively maintain a cohesive team and to apply broader objectives at team level
• Computer literacy especially MS Office and E-mail

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical
• To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own clinical practice.
• To accept clinical responsibility for a defined caseload of non-complex patients and to organize this efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time. To be flexible to assist other colleagues and health care professionals as appropriate.
• To undertake comprehensive assessments of patients using clinical reasoning to select appropriate assessment techniques and determine a clinical diagnosis of the patient’s needs.
• To analyse the information gained from the assessment to formulate objectives and treatment plan in agreement with the patient.
• To select appropriate treatment techniques from within own scope of practice referring to evidence-based practice. This could include, but is not restricted to suction, electrotherapy, manual techniques, patient education, exercise groups, hydrotherapy, gait re-education, supply of appliances and equipment.
• To use clinical reasoning skills and appropriate outcome measures to review and evaluate a patient’s condition at each physiotherapy session to amend the treatment programme as necessary to achieve planned objectives.
• To plan and undertake discharge of patients from physiotherapy when agreed objectives have been reached or treatment is no longer appropriate. This may involve discharge planning as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• To use appropriate communication skills with patients and carers, to ensure understanding of condition. Using communication skills of motivation, reassurance and explanation to encourage patients to participate in their treatment programmes. Proactively overcome potential barriers to effective communication, e.g. hearing loss, altered perception, expressive and receptive dysphasia, cognitive impairment, pain, fear, language difficulties.
• Work within a legal framework to gain valid informed consent.
• To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers and other health care professionals; promoting understanding of the aims of physiotherapy and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.
• To communicate and collaborate with members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure appropriate treatment, discharge and transfer of patients. This may include case conferences, handovers and documentation in the medical records.
• To share information in a timely manner with the Team Leader or Head of Physiotherapy if there are concerns about patient safety, condition or progress.
• To work as an autonomous professional in line with the standards of the Ugandan Physiotherapy Association.
• To meet the regulations of the Ugandan Allied Health Professions Council and fulfil the requirements for physiotherapy registration.
• To adhere to the minimum standards and work in line with the objectives of the physiotherapy department.
• To produce and maintain accurate and up to date documentation in line with legal, professional and departmental requirements. To communicate assessment and treatment results to appropriate disciplines either verbally or in the form of letters and reports.
• To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and risk management and apply to the work situation.
• To maintain own continuing professional development (CPD) by:
• -Keeping up to date with developments to ensure that practice is based on the best available evidence.
– Being an active member of the in-service training programme by the attendance and presentation at tutorials,
– Training sessions, external courses and reflective practice.
• Informal/formal supervision with senior physiotherapist
• To participate in the staff appraisal system and personal development program.
• To participate in monthly peer reviews

Organisational
• To undertake mandatory training in line with platinum medical requirements.
• To adhere to the hospital and departmental policies and procedures. To be aware of all health and safety aspects within the workplace and abide by policies including the prompt reporting and documentation of incidents and accidents.
• To undertake clinical audits as developed with supervising therapist.
• To actively participate in the continued development of the team standards and the service.
• General housekeeping duties and maintenance of work areas. This may include the cleaning of equipment and treatment areas.
• To undertake any other duties that might be considered appropriate by the Team Leader, Head of Physiotherapy and medical office.
