JOB DETAILS:
Position: Program Director - Africa
Location: East Africa - location flexible - willingness to travel regionally and to the US.
Duration: 6-month initial contract with strong preference to extend
Expected Start Date: July 1 or after (start date flexible based on availability)

Summary: Green Empowerment is looking for a dynamic Program Director to support our local team members in advancing exciting new projects while identifying new opportunities to expand the impact of our mission and grow our partnerships in the region. This role will oversee our Uganda program, support the Power Partnership Initiative, represent the organization externally and bring strategy, enthusiasm and capacity to our program expansion efforts.

Background: In 2018 Green Empowerment co-founded the Power Partnership, a coalition of non- governmental organizations, energy experts, and faith-based organizations dedicated to bringing renewable energy to improve services to communities at the last mile. In 2020, we received funding to expand our programs into Uganda. Our work has grown from leading the first Power Partnership project installation, to forming relationships and offering training in the WaSH sector, and providing energy needs analysis for health services providers across Africa.
We are poised for impactful growth and we are excited to expand our leadership team. As a multicultural global organization with a diverse, dedicated and passionate team, we have fostered strong partnerships and deep relationships with communities across the globe and want to replicate the success of our approach with partners that serve communities at the last mile in Uganda and the region.
For almost 25 years Green Empowerment has worked with our partners to bring critical resources to last mile communities and we believe our approach, tools and stories should be shared more broadly.

Position Responsibilities and Key Focus Areas:
Africa Program Development and Strategy (~20%)
• Work to understand the needs in the space of energy and WASH services access in the region, the landscape of stakeholders addressing it and gaps that Green Empowerment can support
• Identify GE’s value proposition and niche for organizations in Uganda and the region.
• Develop a strategy for expanding Green Empowerment’s programs and contributions in the region in collaboration with aligned stakeholders
• Identify and pursue new opportunities within the program, working closely with the existing team and stakeholders.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to target funding opportunities and high-quality proposals for funding to support the program.
• Coordinate closely with other Program Directors, Program Manager and Executive Director to develop growth targets and prioritize opportunities, investments and resourcing needs to build the program and ensure alignment with existing theory of change and strategic plan.
Oversee Program Execution (~40%)
• Director level management to support the team in executing existing and new projects.
• Lead financial management for the region, working closely with the Finance and Admin Director and Executive Director to track performance and budget for program activities.
• Lead contract management for the program, interacting with funders, clients, partners as needed to ensure compliance and clear expectations across stakeholders.
• Institutionalize program expansion efforts by documenting lessons learned and building strategy on program expansion.
• Develop and lead strategy to increase the visibility of the organization and promote our successful approach within our sector, using strategies such as publication of case studies, articles, workshops, courses, and others.
Team Management (~20%)
• Foster strong working dynamics across the team - including improving communications and coordination for roles, responsibilities, deliverables and timelines.
• Proactively support individual team members with compassion and respect - driving action and high productivity with a strong foundation in trust and communication.
• Maintain the organizational culture of values-based approach to work, collaboration and impact, honoring the inputs of community members, team members, partners and other stakeholders.
Strategy and Leadership (~20%)
• Represent Green Empowerment publicly with diverse stakeholders including potential partners, funders, collaborators to promote our mission, approach and projects.
• Strong coordination with the team to ensure that opportunities and priorities are based on what gaps and needs are seen in the field, versus top down
• Participate in monthly leadership meetings to align administration, operations, programs.
• Actively engage in broad discussions to advance the mission, inform organizational strategic planning and tracking progress.
• Inform Board Reporting and other external communications and reporting as needed.

Qualifications:

• 7+ years experience contributing to high-impact mission-driven initiatives
• Strong visionary and strategic thinker who can motivate a team behind ambitious goals.
• Experience with program and financial management.
• Experienced manager who has supervised complex, diverse teams.
• Ability to work across stakeholders over whom you do not have direct authority.
• High emotional intelligence to get the most out of everyone individually and as a team.
• Strong communicator and public speaker.
• Strong technical aptitude.

Desired Attributes:
• Degree in a relevant discipline such as engineering, economics, community development, global management, international policy etc.
• Existing network of stakeholders who could contribute to and amplify Green Empowerment’s programs and visibility.
• Lived or work experience that demonstrates compassion and understanding of the barriers and opportunities facing last-mile communities across the globe.
• Expertise in distributed renewable energy, productive end-use, community-based infrastructure, WaSH, public-private partnerships, monitoring and evaluation and/or creative financing mechanisms for development a big plus.
Status: Full-time, competitive salary, contract details to be determined based on top candidate location.
