JOB DETAILS:
Department Radiology
Reports To Radiologist

OVERALL JOB PURPOSE
To perform quality diagnostic imaging procedures and reports where necessary to all those sent to the radiology department.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
• A 3-year Diploma in Radiography. Added advantage may be a bachelor’s degree in; Radiography & Medical imaging
• Must be registered with Allied Health Professionals’ council of Uganda
• Medical knowledge – to take the best possible images, radiographers use not only their radiology expertise, but also their in-depth understanding of the human body, as well as how injuries and disease affect the body. This helps them better understand the images produced
• Technical expertise – radiographers work with a wide range of technological equipment, which requires technical savvy
• Mathematical ability – radiographers mix the chemicals used for diagnostic imaging, something that requires strong math skills to get the combinations just right
• General knowledge of handling radiology equipment

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Evaluate patients’ medical condition and history to determine most suitable radiographic technique for diagnosis.
• Interact with patients to offer them psychological support and address their concerns regarding an imaging procedure.
• Adjust diagnostic equipment to deliver accurate amount of radiation to patients.
• Operate complex medical instruments such as MRIs, CT scanners, X-ray, ultrasound, and several other imaging devices.
• Direct and supervise the activities of radiography assistants and trainee radiographers.
• Maintain proper records of patient details ensuring confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Regularly inspect diagnostic equipment to ensure they are functional and operate efficiently.
• Assist the radiologist during complex radiological examinations.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety guidelines to minimize risk of exposure to ionizing radiation.
• Correctly position patients prior to X-ray imaging in order to obtain high quality films.
• Attend departmental meetings; participate in CMEs and any other training within or outside the organization.
• Receive and analyse radiology request forms.
• Perform basic ultrasound examinations and their reports as may be required.
• Ensure that patients are registered and verified by the billing department.
• Dispatch results to referring clinicians/ doctors.
• Ensure radiation protection to self, patients and others in the radiology department.
• Participate in stocktaking and ensure that the required consumables are available in the department.
• Providing instructions and information on special procedures like IVPs and enemas to the medical staff especially the nurses.
• Keep up to date with the developments in the field and implement such development in the unit.
• Supervise the radiology assistant in some complex or specialized radiographic procedures

EQUIPMENT AND MACHINERY
• Be familiar with the inventory processes for equipment on the unit and check equipment as assigned.
• Be familiar with ISO standards
