General Summary
The Research Capacity Building Unit at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) Makerere University is seeking 1 Research Fellow for its fully-funded 1-year fellowship who will explore and address bioethical challenges in HIV research for trainees in Uganda for the year 2023/2024 (funded by NIH Fogarty International Center # 2D43TW009771 HIV and co-infection).
Research in people living with HIV (PLWH) in resource limited settings (RLS) poses bioethical challenges for which trainees should be exposed to research bioethical training before carrying out research activities. Populations with low literacy, minimal access to resources and medical treatments are often vulnerable. Participation of pregnant and breastfeeding women or women of child bearing potential in research studies has been a controversial issue due to unknown risks to the developing fetus or infant however, majority of women living with HIV in RLS are of child bearing age. Finally, HIV related research often includes individuals and population groups with a wide range of vulnerability characteristics
Key Responsibilities
1. To conduct the formative phase consisting in a survey of past and current trainees and to conduct in depth interviews with purposely selected past trainees, senior investigators at IDI, and faculty at the School of Medicine to document their experiences and bioethical challenges faced during the implementation of their research.
2. To coordinate the development of a short training curriculum comprising class training, case scenarios and web-based modules for online training for trainees at the School of Medicine. The fellow will engage scientists with long term experience in HIV related research and bioethical expertise from the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) and the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University to develop the content of the training.
1. To assist with the piloting and evaluation of the developed training The training will be delivered to the trainees currently funded under our D43 (#2 D43 TW009771-06 HIV and co-infections) and some purposely selected from the School of Medicine and the feedback will be used to finalize the training. At the end of the grant this content will be officially handed over to the School of Medicine and the course will be offered annually (post award) as part of the School of medicine training.
Person Specification
• Minimum master level in a medical related science (does not need to be a medical doctor)
• Research methods knowledge, previous experience in qualitative and quantitative research ? Interest in bioethics
• Writing skills
• Excellent communication skills.
• Trainable, and able to rapidly adapt to the environment
