Founded in April, 2012 as a member owned, governed and controlled institution , Kyegegwa Rural Electricity Cooperative Society Limited (KRECS) was registered under the Cooperatives Societies Act 1991 and the accompanying regulations, 1992 as a Cooperative Society that has garnered 408 paid up members as at 31st December 2019 and cumulative customer connections of 8,623 by 30th August 2020. Membership has been drawn from farmers, professionals and business community as well as institutions. KRECS is one of the utility Cooperatives and Companies licensed by the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) to distribute and sale electricity in Uganda. KRECS has a concession agreement with the Rural Electrification Board (REB) to promote rural electrification by managing the Central Service Territory beside the Umeme Ltd footprint. The Central Service Territory covers the power lines that serve Kyegegwa, parts of Kyenjojo,Mubende, Mityana, Buikwe and Kayunga districts.
