Prime Vocational Institute (PVI) is a Private Training Institution registered by Ministry of Education & Sports Reg: no MoES/BTVET/203 and a subscribed member of Uganda Association of Private Vocational Institutions (UGAPRIVI). PVI was established to promote access to quality market-oriented skills and gainful employment for the youth and working adults in Uganda. The Institute pays attention to holistic empowerment of the trainees through occupational skills training, entrepreneurship skills, computer competences, life skills development and nurturing of talents through co-curricular activities.
The Institute was established in 2012 and presently operating at her own five-acre campus at Bugabwe, Iganga district. We have 24 well qualified and experienced staff (17 male and 7 female) including six with bachelors’ degrees and 18 with relevant technical diplomas. PVI has seven equipped workshops with four vehicles, two heavy equipment/road works plant equipment (grader and front wheel loader), 20 computers and other relevant equipment. Our current enrollment is 353 students (194 male and 159 female) in 2019. Since its inception, the Institute has trained over 1300 trainees (with 25% female) in various technical, vocational and business courses specially in Mechanical, Building and Construction, Electrical Installations, Plumbing, Agriculture, Hotel and Institutional Catering and Fashion and Design.
The Institute has a 14-member Board of Governors drawn from various fields of occupation and experience. The Chairman of the Board, Mr. Masolo Sam with over 35 years of vocational training and management experience as principal and former deputy director of DIT, the Principal Mrs. Harriet B. Kwebwawera qualified with an engineering degree and over 10 years practical experience in the industry and the Director, Mr. Bazira Michael with over 20 years vocational/business training and management experience including seven years as Country Director of Water Mission Uganda, an International Christian engineering organization. PVI has a well-structured administrative, human resource and financial policies, systems and procedures including an accounting software.
PVI has developed innovative training programmes including establishment of production and service units both at the Institute and within communities. 3
These units provide an opportunity for hands on training in real work life situations for students and currently include Agriculture, Motor Service Garage, Domestic Electrical Installation, Concrete Making and many others.
In addition, PVI has established a mechanism for systematic follow up and enterprise start up programme to ensure students are able to find job placements or start up own enterprises.
Partnership and Collaboration
The Institute collaborates with other professional service providers to jointly train students through apprenticeship and internship on an on-going basis. Some of the companies include Tembo Steels, Kakira Sugar Works, UNICOM Construction, and Water Mission Uganda, Iganga District Local Government, Rotary Uganda and many others. PVI has provided training services to students with sponsorship from World Vision, Kakira Busoga Foundation, Compassion International (Child Development Centres), Uganda Development and Health Associates (UDHA) and Ministry of Education and Sports under the Non-Form Skilling Uganda Programme. The Institute has received tools and equipment from Tools with A Mission – UK, Equip Jinja – Dutch and Capacity Building in Profession Based Education and Training from PUM a Dutch organization. PVI continues to explore partnership with both formal and non-formal experienced service providers to re-enforce the skills development for the trainees.
Accreditation and Quality Control
PVI adheres to quality assurance guidelines by the MoES in delivering BTVET recognized training programmes, hence it is accredited by the two statutory bodies responsible for BTVET examinations and assessment. It has an Examination Center for Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB) No.BTV/282 and Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) No UVQF/324.

Note that the tours are booked well in advance and only a certain number of parents can be accommodated on each tour on first come first serve basis. Also it should be noted that the tour does not guarantee that the child will be accepted in the school as this depends on the availability and also the eligibility of the child.
