Job details:
Justice Centres Uganda(JCU) is a Project of the Justice Law and Order Sector (JLOS) hosted and supervised by the Judiciary to provide legal aid. JCU operates through Centres that provide a wide range of services that include Legal Representation, Alternative Dispute Resolution,Legal Advice, support with Self representation, Psycho-Social Support and Legal Awareness and Sensitization, as well as Advocacy for reform of Laws and negative practices. Justice Centres Uganda operates offices in Kampala, Tororo, Lira, FortPortal, Masaka, Hoima,
Kasese, Rukungiri, Mbale, Mubende and Mukono; and seeks to recruit competent dynamic and creative individuals to join her team of passionate Access to Justice Advocacy Professionals in the following position:

Post: PARALEGAL OFFICERS ( 12 POSITIONS):
(Masaka, Fort Portal, Mukono, Mubende, Rukungiri, Mbale, Kasese)

Responsibilities:

  • Receive clients and manage front desks.
  •  Conduct detailed interview to establish facts, issues.
  • Conduct Means and Merit Test to ascertain eligibility for legal aid.
  • Manage filing system in office.
  • Draft legal documents for Legal Officers.
  • Undertake investigation and research to provide legal officers with information when
    required.
  • Supervise Community Based Volunteers.
  • Conduct paralegal clinics in communities.
  • Attend court to identify persons who need legal aid.
  • Participate in awareness sessions for clients e.g. in communities.
  • Prepare regular reports.
  • Maintain data base of referrals for follow up.
  • Maintain data base of Lawyers on Pro bono and appointment schedule.
  •  Maintain data base of key service providers e.g. hospitals, schools.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of one (1) year’s experience working with a Legal Aid organisation or a Law firm.
  • Good communication skills in English.
  • At least 1 year with experience with law firm or legal aid CSO

Required Competencies:

  • Fluency in any Local language
  • Demonstrable knowledge of MS Office and web-based applications.
  • Good planning and mobilisation skills.
  • Experience in public speaking an asset.
  •  Good team player.
  • Ability to ride and possession of valid riding documents.
  • Willingness to be in the field for up to 60% (or what?) of the time.
  • Dedication to working for and with the poor.

Other Skills: Demonstrable computer knowledge and applications, good interpersonal skills and;
Ability to ride a motor cycle is a key requirement for a Paralegal Officer.
Age : 25 – 40 years
