JOB DETAILS:
Musana Community Development Organisation (MCDO) is an NGO that has created sustainable initiatives focused on Education, Health care, Skills development (craft project, cafe/restaurant & guest house) and Economic development. These high impact enterprises are almost 100% sustainable with locally generated income and also generate additional profits that are used to provide Tuition Scholarships, Medical assistance, Micro loans and skills training to the most vulnerable members of the Community to start their own businesses. Since its inception in September 2008, MCDO has undergone a process of organizational transformation in this process the organization has evolved from a home for vulnerable children and Orphans to a large and robust formal institutional setting.
Musana Community Development Organization (MCDO) is seeking to strengthen its staffing position in order to efficiently execute its activities. Applications are therefore invited from qualified and competent Ugandans to fill vacant positions based at Musana Nursery and Primary Schools in Iganga and Kamuli Districts as indicated below:

Head Teacher (2 positions - One year contract renewable)
Reporting to: Principal Musana Nursery and Primary Schools
Location: Iganga & Kamuli

Job Summary:
The Head Teacher will be responsible for the smooth running of Musana Nursery and Primary school, academic achievement of pupils and management of staff. The Head Teacher will lead, motivate and manage staff by delegating responsibilities, setting expectations, targets and evaluating staff performance against them

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Leadership and Administration:
• Set direction for the school to enable all pupils reach their potential with consistency and acceptable standards.
• Make arrangements for the security, maintenance, development and effective supervision of the school buildings and their contents and of the school grounds (if so required)
• Make arrangements for parent’s/care takers to be given regular information about the progress of their children and other matters affecting the school, so as to promote common understanding of its aims.
• Create and maintain an effective partnership with parent’s/care takers to support and improve pupils' achievement and personal development.
• Work with parent’s/care takers to ensure children have access to extended services, extracurricular opportunities and other social and educational experiences
• Attend meetings of administrators and make reports to them in connection with his/her responsibilities as required either on a reqular basis or from time to time.
• Allocate, control and account for the financial and material resources of the school which are under the control of the Head teacher and adheres to organizations financial regulations.

2) Human Resource Management:
• Liaise with Human Resource department and participate in the Human Capital planning, recruitment, selection, appointment and orientation process of new staff (both teaching and non-teaching staff)
• Build teacher commitment to professional development and ensure that employee performance reviews are conducted for all staff within the school.
• Ensure that the duty of providing cover for absent teachers is shared equitably among all teachers in the school, taking account of their teaching and other duties
• Ensure that teachers at the school receive in a timely manner the information they need to carry out their professional duties effectively Lead, motivate, support, challenge and develop staff at all levels in order to secure and sustain continuous improvement and staff well-being.
• Support middle and senior leadership of the school to build capacity, recognize existing talents and encourage delegation
• Challenge under performance at all levels and work with the HR team to put in place effective procedures to deal with underperforming staff Provide information, references and testimonials about the work and performance of staff employed at the school, with due regard to the principles of equal opportunities, where such information is relevant to their future employment.
• Advise and assist the management of the school in performance of their functions without prejudice.
• Manage all employee relations matters in conjunction with the HR team
• Provide input into the staff welfare initiatives and once agreed, support implementation
• Be responsible for the supervision and training of teachers during their induction periods in accordance with the Induction Regulations, and making a recommendation at the end of probation period.
• Ensure that newly-qualified teachers and those returning to teaching after a break in service have access to adequate support in their first year of service or resumed service.

3) Academics and learning standards:
• Ensure a healthy balance of academic and co-curricular activities for pupils while maintaining effective Teaching and Learning (Technical Outputs).
• Monitor teaching and learning, records of work and curriculum covered, monitor time table Implementation and pupil assessment, Implement Co-curricular activities and monitor Learning achievements and work with teachers to make recommendations for modifying them as needed.
• Ensure continuous effective systems of planning, assessment, recording and reporting, using data and benchmarks to monitor attainment and progress, in every pupil's learning and using this data continuously to support and improve standards.
• Promote equality and inclusion in all aspects of school life
• Ensure that the requirements of the Code of Practice are met.
• Ensure that staff are aware of current educational developments and are kept up to date through an ongoing program of continuous professional development
• Determine, organize and implement a balanced curriculum for the school, having regard to the needs, experiences, interests, aptitudes and stage of development of the pupils and the resources available to the school.
• Ensure that all pupils in attendance at the school take part in collective worship and spiritual development
• Ensure that all aspects of school performance are monitored and evaluated in a robust, recurring manner and maintain a record of self-evaluation and areas for improvement, and progress made in respect
• Evaluate the standards of teaching and learning in the school, and ensuring that proper standards of professional performance are established and maintained.

4) Discipline:
• Ensuring that proper standards of behavior and discipline are implemented by making measures generally known within the school and ensuring the maintenance of good order and discipline at all times during the school day when pupils are present on the school premises and whenever the pupils are engaged in authorized school activities, whether on the school premises or elsewhere.

5) Relations with educational establishments/ bodies:
• Establish a working relationship with the District Education Office
• Engage with networks collaborating to build curriculum diversity, professional support and extended services.
• Maintaining relationships with organizations representing teachers and other persons on the staff of the school.
• Maintaining liaison with other schools and education establishments with which the school has a relationship
• Manage the process of school partnership consultation

6) Safeguarding children
• Ensure healthy wellbeing of pupils is encouraged through a nurturing environment.
• Safeguard and promote welfare of pupils and ensure that all stake holders are aware of policies/ code of conduct on child protection and safeguarding.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
• A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Primary Education from a recognized University/ Institution.
• Registered as a Graduate Teacher with the Ministry of Education and Sports.
• A minimum of Eight (8) years of proven teaching experience in a Primary School A post graduate Diploma/Master's Degree in Education or related field is an added advantage;
• A relevant Prior experience in school administration is a must.

The Person should be:
• With knowledge of the minimum requirements for running a school as set by the Directorate of Education Standards
• With Knowledge of UNEB requirements for managing an examination center
• With Knowledge of current Teachers Policy
• With excellent written and public speaking skills
• Computer literate with report writing skills
• Computer literate with report writing skills
• A Good team player, results oriented, self-motivated, able to work with minimum supervision and for long hours under extreme pressure
• With excellent Oral and written communication skills
• With creative thinking and possess solid problem-solving skills
• With demonstrated interest in community education
• Willing to work and reside in a rural setting of Iganga/Kamuli District
