JOB DETAILS:
The Unit is an internationally recognized centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research, and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts. The Unit is now seeking enthusiastic and experienced individuals to fill the following position:

Clinical Officer – ENT – (03 Positions)
Position Code: COENT -922
Reports to: Research Coordinator
Station: Kyamulibwa, Uganda
Duration: 3 months

Job Purpose:
The position holder will be responsible for conducting ear and hearing assessments on study participants following standardized protocols developed for this study. This will include: taking reported history, conducting hearing tests and ear examinations, offering treatment in the field (if applicable) and referring participants to health, rehabilitation and assistive product service providers as appropriate. He/she will be responsible for collecting data using tabletbased mobile application developed for this study.

The Functional Needs Assessment Survey is a population-based survey in Kalungu district
Uganda. This project will field test a new survey tool, The Functional Needs Assessment Tool (FNAT). FNAT is a survey method for assessing impairment, functioning and need for rehabilitation services and assistive products in the following domains: vision, hearing, mobility, communication, cognition self-care and mental health. It uses both clinical and selfreported assessments, with data collection through a bespoke app. This study aims to conduct the first field test of FNAT to estimate i) the prevalence of functional difficulties and ii) the unmet and total need for rehabilitation services and assistive products in Kalungu district. The survey will be conducted in selected villages throughout Kalungu district.

Roles & Responsibilities
• Attend study training;
• Travel daily, with survey team, to different study areas throughout Kalungu and visit households selected to be included in the survey;
• Complete clinical assessment of study participants following standardized survey protocols (to be covered in training) including;
i) Conduct hearing tests (using a validated mobile application),
ii) Conduct ear examinations to identify likely diagnosis/cause of hearing impairment, and;
iii) Identify appropriate service and assistive product needs and refer as appropriate.
• Ensure daily tablet-based data entry is completed thoroughly and accurately;
• Liaise regularly with study coordinator and team leaders and give regular reports on progress with data collection;
• Participate in Survey staff meetings and retraining sessions as required;
• Follow all ethical and protocol procedures;
• Follow COVID-19 Infection Prevention and Control guidelines; and,
• Perform any other duties allocated by the line manager.

Person Specification
• Diploma in ENT clinical medicine and community health;
• Certificate in Good clinical practice;
• Completed courses in: tablet-based data applications; research methods; disability, rehabilitation and/or assistive technology training;
• Certificate in management/ leadership;
• Should possess at least three years working experience as an ENT Clinical Officer in a clinical setting (hospital or health center);
• Experience working on surveys or other types of research;
• Experience of working in the community with diverse groups, including people with disabilities.
• Management experience;
• Knowledge on clinical assessment and interventions for ENT;
• Tablet-based data collection skills; and,
• Knowledge of local language of study area (Luganda).
