JOB DETAILS:
The National Science, Technology, Engineering and Innovation Centre (NSTEIC) was created to enhance the technological and skill base of Ugandan graduates, craftsmen, technicians and engineers as well as instructors through the Flexible Factory Learning & Infrastructure Model covering the technology areas of construction engineering (including construction machinery technology & civil engineering technology), automotive technology, agricultural mechanization, industrial technology, metallurgy (especially. precision welding), and electronic & electrical R&D. The Centre responds to the need to create more jobs especially for the youth, improve on the competitiveness of Uganda’s products and firms, promote a culture of creativity and innovation, and improve the livelihoods of Ugandans. NSTEIC requires the services of dedicated, competent, innovative and result- oriented individuals for employment on a contract basis for the posts below;

The individuals recruited will be training others to perform the same skills the applicants already have. They will provide evidence that they are trainable in a number of areas necessary in Training of Trainers (ToT). This requires prior and ongoing experience in the relevant technical field. It also requires the demonstration of some of the competences in generic ToT.

To qualify, the applicant must have:

Role Purpose
Works to strict safety and quality requirements to achieve daily production targets on Computer Numerical Control Machines and convectional machining equipment.
Responsible for training/re-tooling craftsmen, technicians and engineers

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Involved in highly skilled complex and precision work, machining components from specialized materials using convectional or Computer Numerical Control machine tools such as Centre Lathes, Vertical & Horizontal milling machines, Horizontal & cylindrical grinding machines, electrical discharge machines and multi axis CNC machining centres.
2. Understand specifications of the task at hand and the desired result by reading and interpreting blueprints, engineering drawings, technical data and computergenerated programs
3. Sets up, adjusts and operates equipment settings, as applicable to the machine tools being used.
4. Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts and tables or study sample parts to determine machining operation to be performed, and plan best sequence of operations
5. Computes dimensions and tolerances and measures and lays out work pieces
6. Sets up, operates and maintains a variety of machine tools including computer numerically controlled (CNC) tools to perform precision, machining operations such as sawing, turning, milling, boring, planning, drilling, precision grinding and other operations
7. Fits and assembles machined metal parts and subassemblies using hand and power tools
8. Verifies dimensions of products for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments
9. Estimates length of time required to complete jobs.
10. Translate instructions into computer commands so the machines can perform the correct function
11. Prepare and load raw materials and parts onto the machines
12. Prepare a test run to check if the machines produce outputs according to specifications.
13. Supervise the machines while they execute the tasks and make any necessary adjustments to produce a better result
14. Inspect and measure finished products and compare them with requirements to determine if the process has been completed properly
15. Identifies and escalates any activity that has potential to cause harm or damage
16. Reports breakdown root causes, equipment faults and concerns to supervisors.
17. Identifies spare parts and consumables needed and logs usage.
18. Maintains the highest standard of workmanship at all times.
19. Works within 5S methodology to maintain the workplace to high standard at all times.
20. Keeps up to date with developing manufacturing and engineering trends regarding tool making.
21. Trains craftsmen, technicians, engineers and graduates in assigned areas.

Role Requirements: (Minimum Required Qualifications)
• Minimum of a national machinist diploma or mechanical engineering diploma from a recognized university/tertiary institution.
• At least three (3) years of experience in machining.
• Possession of degree in Mechanical engineering is an added advantage
• Membership with the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers is an added advantage
