Summary:
The purpose of this position is to serve as Assistant team Leader, heading one of the Ecology teams for on-going plague Ecology projects under the Zoonotics Disease Cooperative Agreement between the Uganda Virus Research institute and the US Centres for Diseases Control and Prevention. This is a full time field oriented job based at the UVRI/CDC Plague Program Laboratory in Arua. Applicants are required to have professional knowledge of biological science sufficient to independently perform re-occurring, well-defined ecology projects. Applicants are also required to have supervisor and management experience and be willing to work full time in remote villages of West Nile Regions of Uganda and elsewhere in Uganda as need may arise. The Applicant should be field oriented and self-motivated.

Major Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will assist the Head Ecologist in providing leadership to Ecology field teams based in Arua and operating in remote villages of Arua and Zombo districts in West Nile Uganda. This is a challenging position that requires delivery of key milestones from the outset. it will involve working with communities and other stakeholders both internal and external to UVRI at a range of levels of seniority and within a wide range of specialist areas across institutions/organizations.

Duties
Reports to the Head Ecologist and carries out the following duties:

  • leads the Ecology team in all field activities.
  • Assists with the development and planning of ecology study protocols together with study Principal investigators (Pi’s)
  • Assist the Head Ecologist in preparation of monthly activity and interim reports .
  • Assists the Ecology Department Head to ensure that all studies run on schedule and meet the targeted specific objectives
  • Assists in budgeting for field activities and ensures that budgeted supplies are sufficient to car out activities under the different projects.
  • Assists the Head Ecologist in accounting for Finances and field activities under the department.

Other Responsibilities

  • Observe and comply with relevant UVRI policies and regulations, including key policies on Confidentiality, Conflict of interest, Data Protection, Financial Regulations, Health and Safety Policy, information Systems Security Policy and intellectual Property Rights
  • Ensure teamwork, integrity, efficiency, and competence in the group
  • Maintain safe workplace practice and procedures in accordance with the, requirements of UVRI Health and Safety policy
  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of relevant statutory Health and Safety legislation and recommendations

Qualifications required:
A minimum academic qualification of a Bachelor's degree in Botany/Zoology or a degree in any other related biological Science field with at least 2 years‘ experience in relevant active research organization with leadership focus.

Skills
Computer skills in Microsoft office package.
