Description
• Provide technical support on implementing PROSSIVA banana research activities to address seed system bottlenecks in target countries with a particular focus on Uganda and Tanzania.
• Work with banana seed systems stakeholders to review and improve clean seed production practices (tissue culture, micropropagation, and other forms of community seed production).
• Contribute to research targeted to document, improve and disseminate best practices for community-level seed production including seed health management.
• Assist with quality assurance and regulatory standards developed in collaboration with NARS and regulatory bodies and engage with various seed actors on implementation.
• Work with partners to design and implement varietal launch processes and promotional strategies for new varieties.
• Engage with partners for work plan development and conduct monitoring visits particularly in East Africa to ensure that outputs and outcomes are achieved as planned.
• Provide regular updates on progress with PROSSIVA banana component activities in focus countries and compile Banana Component reports for the Project Management Team.
• Analyse and write up research, and work with project colleagues to publish in various formats (reports, blogs, journal publications, etc).
• Assist in building and maintaining good relationships with PROSSIVA Banana component implementing partners and actively engage with banana breeding teams.
• Perform all other related duties that may be assigned from time to time by the supervisor.
Requirements
Qualification
• Master’s degree in Agricultural Science/Breeding/Agronomy or related discipline with a minimum of three (3) years with relevant practical experience in plant propagation/biotechnology, crop protection, and agricultural seed systems preferably in R&D work on seed systems development, extension services, technology transfer/promotion
Competencies
The ideal candidate must:
• Have excellent writing and oral communication skills in English for efficient communication with diverse project implementing partners and reporting.
• Be proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and be familiar with teleconferencing applications (such as Zoom and MS Teams). Be proficient in software applications for statistical analysis, such as SAS, SPSS, or R.
• Be well organized, able to multitask and work under pressure to meet deadlines with keen attention to detail.
• Have a positive attitude, strong team spirit and the ability to develop constructive research collaborations with individuals and institutions with a diverse set of backgrounds and geographies.
• Be experience in publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journal articles which are recognized by the Thomson indexing system ()
• Have sound knowledge of agricultural systems in sub-Saharan Africa
