We are undertaking a clinical trial that aims to assess the safety and efficacy of a novel oral iron supplement for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in young children. This study requires field work that will be conducted in the North Bank communities close to the MRCG Basse research site and a laboratory component in the laboratories at MRCG Basse, Keneba and the Clinical Laboratories at MRCG Fajara.

We are looking for a Clinical Trial Coordinator/Clinician to be based at MRCG Basse. The post-holder will support the principal investigators in all aspects of the trial management and will have the responsibilities of local principal investigator. S/he will oversee the daily conduct of the study, supen/ise the data entry into the eCRFs, supen/ise the trial team of Clinicians, Nurses and Field Assistants. S/he will be the focal point for communication with the sponsor, principal investigators, the trial committees and the study team.

About Basse:
Basse is located in the Upper River Region of The Gambia approximately 400 kilometres from the MRCG Main Office at Fajara with limited facilities for schooling. There are excellent accommodation facilities provided by MRCG for staff with uninterrupted power supply and pipe borne water.

Essential requirements:

  • MB BS or equivalent primary medical qualification.
  • Post graduate studies in epidemiology, clinical trials or related subject or at least three years of clinical trial experience with proven capacity to effectively take on different aspects of a Clinical Trial.
  • At least 4 years of experience in clinical research.
  • Previous work on clinical trials with drugs or vaccines conducted following ICH-GCP requirements.
  • Practical experience of health research in developing countries.
  • Experience of staff management.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Commitment to working in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
  • A flexible and well-organized approach to work and an ability to meet deadlines.
  • Attention to details.
  • Excellent organizational skills. A team player and motivator.
  • Willingness to be on-call and work outside the normal working hours during the trial follow-up period.

Desirable:

  • Ability to work on databases and statistical packages.
  • Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access).

The post is up to 31st March 2018 in the first instance.

The salary will be paid in Grade 2,35 Points of MRC Unit The Gambia’s payscale at a net monthly salary of 91, 751 Dalasi. This converts to a net pay of $2,038 approximately per month using the prevailing Dalasi/USD exchange rate.

Please note that the salary will be paid in Dalasi and that the USD figure quoted is only given as a guide.

For displaced staff the package will include rent-free furnished accommodation, flights, displacement allowance for spouse and children, contribution to school fees and shipment of personal effects.
