JOB DESCRIPTION
Nile Vocational Institute (NVI) is a Christian private Vocational Institute established by the African Evangelistic Enterprise (AEE), a Ugandan NGO; in partnership with a Germany Child Care Organization
- Kindernothilfe (KNH) -Helping a child in need in 1988. NVI is ranked as the leading Private Vocational Institute in the country by the Visionaries of Uganda under the skilling of Uganda Programme awards for the last 3 years.
The Institute is accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) and offers the following programmes; Diploma Courses include Catering and Hotel Management, Early Childhood Development, Secretarial Studies, Accountancy Certificate courses include Catering and Hotel Management, Early Childhood Development, Secretarial Studies, Accountancy, Cosmetology ( Hairdressing), National Certificate in Agriculture, Textile Technology ( Tailoring and Garment Cutting), Blocklaying and Concreting practice, Electrical Installation and Electronics, Motor Vehicle Technicians, Plumbing and Pipe fitting, Tractor Operation and Driving, Welding and Metal Fabrication, Carpentry and Joinery and Driving

To ensure the achievement of the vision of NVI, we are seeking for a person of high and proven integrity, commitment and passion, with strong Christian values to join the current Management team as a deputy director in charge of training and academics. It is very important that this person is results-orientated and committed to transforming the lives of young people to achieve their potential. The individual must be committed to providing the very best opportunities, experience and expertise at NVI so that all students regardless of gender have equal prospects for future employment. Nile Vocational Institute therefore, invites applications from suitably qualified staff for the Leadership and Management position described below;
Post: Deputy Director (Training & Academics)
Reports to: Director
Responsible for: Heads of Sections, Dean of Students, Administrative Assistant, Examinations Secretary, Follow up Officer, Assistant Librarian.
Main Purpose of the Post:
To spearhead leadership to oversee student’s enrolment and statistical database, effective curriculum delivery, efficiency in evaluation of learners, quality teaching and instruction in all departments in order to equip learners with employable skills and competencies and be team player in implementation of the institute strategic plan.
DUTIES
• Plan and coordinate teaching and training operations to achieve the Institute’s strategic aims and objectives
• Ensure that teaching, learning and evaluation of learners are conducted effectively & efficiently in all sections per approved standard curriculum
• Plan and conduct periodic curriculum review with support of heads of sections to ensure relevance to the job market and furthering education of learners
• Coordinate teaching/training staff capacity building programmes through high quality continuous professional development and/ or coaching and mentoring
• Oversee compliance of teacher’s code of conduct at the institute, breach of Christian values, child policy implementation and student’s safety, health and disciplinary obligations
• Coordinate quality assurance protocols accredited to the institute by education authorities to uphold periodic internal and external inspections
• Develop a one stop center for reliable student’s enrolment and performance database and all relevant statistical data pertaining to teaching, learning and evaluation of learners
• Promote public relations and effective communication systems within the institute, peers and strategic partners for enhanced collaboration and networking
• Coordinate research on market driven courses and develop innovative and creative platforms to generate effective solutions to emerging challenges and problem solving.
• Participate in budgeting process, manage and account for all resources channeled through the department and be a team player in institute financial management programmes.
• Comply with the Institute’s policies and procedures outlined in respective manuals and attend Governing Council meetings
• Carryout any other duties assigned by the Director
PERSON SPECIFICATION
a. Qualifications
• An Honours Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Technical, Vocational Studies or Honours Bachelor’s Degree in any of the related courses at the Institute.
• A diploma in Technical Teacher/Instructor Education from a recognized University/ Institution or diploma in Vocational Instructor Training (DVTI) is a must for all applicants and should be registered with the Ministry of Education and Sports.
• A post graduate qualification in management studies or diploma in training institution management (DTIM) is an added advantage.
b. Experience
• Must teaching/ Instructing experience of not less than 5 years in a recognized institution
• Must have been head of institution for a period of 8 years
• Should be very conversant in the running of Institute Affairs, procedures and systems, and should be well versed with the context of BTVET system and the Ugandan tertiary education system.
