Job Description:
Job Title: Director, Socio-Behavioural Research (D-SBR)
Location: IAVI Africa offices: Nairobi Kenya. Entebbe-Uganda, Capetown-South Africa
Reports to: Regional Director - Africa
Position Summary:
The Director. Socio-Behavioural Research will be responsible for defining, designing and implementing LAVI's socio-behavioural research portfolio in Africa, in collaboration with research partners. IAVI works with local research institutions in five countries in Africa to implement HIV Biomedical Prevention Research for: vaccines, antibodies and other biomedical products. Most of this work is conducted within HIV/AIDS at risk populations.
The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for developing and implementing SBR strategies for the USAID supported ADVANCE (Accelerate the Development of Vaccines and New Technologies to Combat AIDS Epidemic) initiative. The Director, SBR will be responsible for developing and integrating Africa-based SBR into other IAVI products and programs, as directed
As part of an end-to-end product development approach, understanding communities/end-users and the socio-behavioral drivers and barriers to participation in R&D and ultimately, access and adoption of new products is essential. The SBR Director will develop innovative socio-behavioural projects that will proactively inform product design, product development, access plans, product introduction and global and national policies and practices
The successful candidate will work closely with research partners and key stakeholders (including donors) to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment to identity gaps and key socio-behavioural questions. Based on this needs assessment. the Director, SBR will lead the development of a robust research portfolio in collaboration with AVI colleagues and external partners. The Director, SBR will be responsible for working closely with research partners in the design, implementation, analysis and publication and dissemination of findings from these research studies. Additionally, this position will support IAVI's local partners to build upon their capacity to develop and Implement their own SBR projects through mentorship and training, as needed.

Experience and Skills:
• Advanced degree in social sciences, market research, or a related field required.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in designing, executing and publishing socio-behavioural research studies, preferably in Africa. Experience with HIV/AIDS and for sexual and reproductive health SBR research preferred.
• Demonstrated experience in disseminating key findings from SBR research in peer-reviewed publications, conferences and or policy forums required.
• Proven experience in translating research findings into global regional or national policies and practices is highly desirable.
• Proven experience in quantitative and qualitative data analysis (using NVIVO or similar software) is required.
• Experience with behavioral economics and/or health economics a plus.
• Passion for IAVI mission.
• Proven track record in leading multi-country and interdisciplinary teams is required.
• Demonstrated diplomatic skills and excellent judgment required
• Proven ability to communicate to diverse audiences ranging from high level political organizations to lay community groups required.
• Strong organizational skills, resourceful, and mature self starter, with proven experience in building a strong, coherent program and operations, preferably in resource poor settings. Experience in a scientific, medical cr clinical research programs preferred.
• Willingness to travel at least 20% of the time.
